Zi) Ste Saiftj itomtt. ASTORIA. OREGON: FRIDAY. ADGDST 1C, 1SS9. OF LOCAL IMPORTANCE. Titebe will be a commercial confer ence in San Francisco on the 29tli of this month, of local interest to Astoria. It. is the desire of the projectors of the movement to have then and there represented every commercial body on the coast. The Astoria chamber of commerce, in common with other boards of trade, is invited to send a delegation. The subjects for consideration are the manifest efforts of England to control the commerce of the Pacific, and the best means to adopt to extend and retain such'trade on and for this coast. Prominent among tEe topics to be discussed is the energetic construc tion of the Nicaragua canal as a means of national defense aud commercial supremacy. The completion of that canal would be worth some .trillions of dollars to Astoria and Clatsop county in in creased commerce, enhanced lumber values and augmented commercial fa cilities. Other topics to be then discusse d maritime defense of Pacific perts: encroachments of England in the south Pacific: permanent establish ment of ocean mail steamship lines on Pacific waters: abolition of the bonding system for railway transpor tation through foreign territory, and kindred subjects to be brought before the conference aid in aggregating a series of commercial questions of sufficient importance to us at the gateway of the Columbia to justify sending a delegation from this city to attend the conference at San Fran cisco. ATHSTIE PERPLEXED. "For heaven's sate what does your motVr do to you children that makes you so hi:i- ery?" "Please, auntie, sho gives us Joy's Vejv ti lls Sarsaparilla and its awful good." T. S. Finally my wife, becoming frishtened, procured alo t of 'The California Remedy' Joy's Veri-1 Barsaparilla. It cured me right un. In tn I dM fco much for me that I sent for a iiaU-.1o.. . and gave it to my children, with the most Isfactory results." ADVICE TO 3IOTIIKHN. J ChliareE Cry ferPitcIier's Castoria THREE THREADED XOZZLES. They JInst Be Used at the Firemen's Tournament. Tacoma News, 13. George A. Burbank. secretary of the paid fire department, returned from Vancouver this morning. Secre tary Burbank represented chief Bainey at the meeting of the directors of the Northwestern Firemen's asso ciation which was held in Vancouver, commencing last Saturday. The director's meeting was held to take action concerning the tourna ment which is to be held in Tacoma next September. The directors of the association decided that the tourna ment should continue four days in stead of three. This action was taken so as to give the judges plenty of time in which to make the awards. The tournament begins on September 16th and will continue four days, in ac cordance with their decision. The most important action taken at the director's meeting was the barr ing out .of the snap-nozzle, it was decided that nothing but a three- thread nozzle should be used. In many tournaments the snap-nozzle is allowed, and it usually causes dis putes and trouble. A company which has a snap noz zle saves from four to five seconds in a race, as the nozzle works automat ically, -while the company whose en gine is fitted with the ordinary nozzle has to take time to make the connec tion. This causes an inequality which the directors of the association sought to overcome by entirely prohibiting the use of the snap nozzle. Secretary Burbank says that the directors were especially pleased with the manner in which chief Bainoy has arranged the prizes, which aggregate $4,200. The first prize is to be S1000, which the directors thought would be sufficient to bring fire companies from the east to participate in the tournament The Northwestern associ ation comprises the companies in Washington, Oregon and British Co lumbia. Compauies from anywhere in the United States or Canada will be allowed to enter the races provid ing they join the Northwestern asso ciation, which they can do by simply paying the membership fee of S10. The directors decided to print bills and circulars at the expense of the association to advertise the coming tournament at Tacoma. They will advertise the tournament all through the eastern states and Canada, and do everything possible to make it a com plete success. Hale and Hearty in Old Age. What is more beautiful than an ancient treo clothed with an amplo robo of vcrduro. Apt is the comparison between such a growth and an old man or woman infused with hoalth and vigor.
