How a Georgia Lawyer Obtained His Reward. "Tbe hardest earned fee I ever made," remarked a lawyer in the city j court room a iew aays ago, -waa in a justice's court in Atlanta. That was just after I came here, over teu years ago. The case was before Judge Butt, when his office was on Mitchell street, near tbe corner of Whitehall. Surely a lawyer never worked harder for a 810 fee "than I did in that case." It was during the recess for dinner nud quite a number cf lawyers had gathered about one of the open win dows to enjoy the breeze and to smoLe their cigars. The conversa tion took a relrospective, reminiscent turn. "My client," continued the lawyer, his eyes twinkling at the recollection, "was Gabe Turner, au old darkey. He was charged with assault and bat tery. Gabe was a big deacon in some church I've forgotten the name and was much worked up over the matter. It was really a trivial case, aud I was iuclined to believe with Gabe that it was all a persecution and done at the instigation of au other deacon in Gabe'a church. "Well, the day came for the trial, and the courtroom was crowded. About half of the congregation had come to swear for Gabe, and the other half for the other man. Two-thirds of the witnesses were women, and they just would go back to the be ginning you know what that means in a negro church quarrel and tell the whole story. "It was a rare old case. "Finally we agreed to submit the case without auy more evidence and without argument. "OJd Gabe was ncquittod. "Next day, -a3 he had promised, Gabe came to see me. Tho old parky was able to pay, aud I knew him to be prompt in meoting his debts. I felt a vague misgiving, though, as soon as I- saw his face. He came to the point at once. " 'Well boss,' said Gabe, 4I pome to pay you for my case.' "That souuded all right, but Gabe looked skittish. I noticed that, I suppose, because I needed tho money so. I just had to have it. " 'An' if we kin agree, old Gabe went on, I've got the money right here.' " 'Agree,' said I 'didu't we make au agreement to begin with?" " Dat'8 so "admitted Gabo, 'but I was couutiu' on a speech in dat case. Dem niggers ought certainly to been 'sposed. De speech was de big part.' "But I wasn't going to give up that $10 if there was any w'tiy out'6f it. " 'The charge is dismissed against you, Gabe,' said I, 'and the other ne gro paid all the costs. What good could it do to make a speech?' " "Twouldn'er doue no good. De speech was de big part wid me' cause I wanted to hear dem niggers 'sposed. "'Gabe,' said I, finally 'will you stick to your contract or will yon not?' '"I'll stick to it,' said Gabe, 'ef you'll make de speech.' "I had to have 310, and there was only one way to get it. I shut the doors and windows and set Gabe in one corner of the room. Then I took off my coat and made the speech of my life. I understood, of course, that Gabe didn't care anything about the law. All he wanted was to hear the other crowd 'sposed.' " "I spoke accordingly. I called the other deacon a flop-eared hound, a chicken-thief, and the Lord only knows what not. The witnesses on the other side were villains of the deepest dye. They were spots on the earth and imps of perdition." "I spoke for teu minutes, I sup pose. Old Gabe leaned back and his black face was radiant. At the flop eared hound part Old Gabe's hands came together in a hallelujah pat, and a happiness came over him too deep for words." " 'Glory 1 said Gabe, 'dat's right!' " "I woundup with a eulogy on the godliness aud honesty of my client, Gabriel." "Well, gentlemen, I got the 10. Gabe moved to Gwinnett county nf ter that and twice siuoe then he has needed a lawyer. Both times he came to Atlanta after me. I can charge what I please and Gabe pays it cheertuUy" Atlanta Constitu tion. GUABU AGAINST TIIK STUIKK. And always have a bottle of Acker's En glish Itemedy in the house. "The same routine business," re plied state surveyor-general D. W. Taylor, in response to an inquiry for news by a reporter who walked up three flights of stairs in the United States post office building in quest of the ever evasive item yesterday afternoon. ''There is more land be ing surveyed all the time, though here we only fecord the work and make official rfeports. Just at pres ent most of the work is being doue in the Nehalem valley back of Saddle mountain. That section is opening up rapidly. The surveys are let by contract. -A short time ago we made an estimate that there are still twenty million acres of unsurveyed land in t lie state of Oregon. Ure'yonian, 11.
