The sum of . i Qli 117 O id nlrnni' wii been known as a dress reformer nas lately started in England a movement intended to effect a change in the mourning vestments which fashion insists on her sex wearing. The chief force of her attack is directed against "widows' weeds." This is rather unfortunate, for most of us are not personally concerned with the way our own widows may dress, while as to the widows of our friends, we are always gallantly prepared not only to ! reform their weeds, but to abolish them altogether. We do not believe the wicked story that every well regulated widow's weeds are regarded as an advertisment that in one loving heart, at least, there are apartments to let, one aching void to fill, for there is plenty of evidence of the evolution of these emblems of woe. The most objectionable feature of the aforesaid weeds is, of course, the long crape veil, which tends, it is stated, to drag backward and downward the head, and it worn long, to result inevitably in a headache, and these veils are es pecially to be dreaded in the case of young widows who, it is said, for we are not connoisseurs in widows, wear the longest veils. As according to Lady Harberton's picture of the tormentors, this piece of dry goods inflicts upon its wearer, suttee is, by comparison n mild form of mourning; we cannot blame young widows for seeking speedy relief from its incumbering folds. We hope the little white cap that once, in the far off time when we endeavored to study widows, gave such a piquant grace and nun-like look to her mourning features, will be spared or revived, for we are speak ing so utterly without prejudice that we do not know whether it is still worn. But the reform in mourning ought to go further than the woe-curtailing of widow's weeds. It ought to reach all our funeral customs. It is ridiculous enough to make a display of woe by wearing colors that do not suit us and dresses that are unhealthy and un comfortable. Genuine sorrow needs no outer symbol, in fact, it needs no conspicuous demonstrations. There are, as the poor old Egyptian king said to his triumphant conqueror, Boss Ojera House 5,147.25 is already raised. CHEE GONG HAJfGS TO-DAY. Governor Pennoyer will let the law take its course irtlie case of Chee Gong. This morning the condemned man was trreatlv excited as he had been told that thier is no hope for him. In the presence of sheriff ivelly, jailor Hoxie and several others he gesticulated wildly, and, perhaps, for the fiftieth time did he enter into full details of the crime for which he is to hatifr nnd of -which he protests that he is innocent. He said that he is not afraid to die, but he does not like the idea of being executed in a wood shed. He wants to be hangea m uie upeu air. He criticised the jury who con victed him saying: "They catchee all kind men for uiy: Diinu, lame, nu can hear, no got sense. That .kind july find any man guilty." Before Chee Gong was taken to the witness room this morning sheriff Kelly asked him: "Do you want to get shaved and hair fixed." He re plied: "Me no care all same now, hang to-morrow, all same." nOW THE DROP WIIiI WORK. A. J. Coffee, electrician, this morn ing explained how the drop on the scaffold will be sprung which is m the middle of the platform. The trap door is provided with two hinges in the center of the door, underneath it is a lever connected with a spring, one end of which is fastened to tne side of the platform. The spring is secured to the lever by a large iron pin through the head of which a rope is run carrying an iron block weigh ing about fifty pounds. The block is connected with an electric mechanical tripping device, which in its turn is operated by the medium of a local battery and push button. The button is fixed into one of the upright timbers of the gallows. The moment it receives the slightest pres sure the trap door gives way. A number of Chinamen inimical to the condemned man, stated to day that they would apply for passes to rpr Chee Goner executed. Sheriff Kelly, however, said this afternoon that he would admit no Chinese with in the shed, because he dpes not de sire to add to Gong's misery by seeing his enemies before him eyeing his exit from earth. Some of the Chinese who were personally active in secur ing Gong's conviction are among the number who expect to obtain passes. All day long knots of white men and women and. Chinamen were standing on the sidewalk in front of the window where the doomed man was taking his farewell glances at the outer world. Some of the morbid crowd would speak to Gong, and he seemed pleased to talk with everyone. TV pnnh lin nrntaaterl his innocence. He seemed to have just a flicker of Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9, 10. The European who said that Amer icans had added a new terror to death by their funeral customs, was not far wrong. The corpse in a new suit of clothes, embalmed or pickled, often painted up, always refrigerated, the metallic casket, with the window over the face, and the glass-sided hearse, so built to exhibit what was facetious ly called the iloral tributes all this would strike him as coarser in tastOj even than the mutes and feathers of British lamentations. A movement in favor of Avicker-work coffins was spoken of some years ago, but seems to have died out. It ought to have succeeded, for the commonest princi ples of hygiene dictate the necessity of a speedy dissolution of inanimate matter. The expenses, ton. are in most cases most extravagant and dis tressing to the surviving family. The whole system, in brief, is a remnant of barbarism in its worst form. HE TOOK THE IVRONCt MEDICINE. THE ELIXIR OF IiIFE. TvnTAVAPOT.Ts. Aucr. 8. An exneri- ment with Dr. Brown-Sequard's elixir of life has been made here by Dr. D. M. Purman. A reddish fluid obtained from the tissue of a healthy sheep was injected into the arms of Noah A. Clark, aged fifty years, who is suffer ing from general debility. The effect was marvelous. Four hours after ward Mr. Clark walked down town from Fort Wayne avenue and climbed up two flights of stairs witnout stopping. At that time, when asked how he felt, he said: "I feel a decided difference. It used to take me an hour to get down town, and this time I walked it within twenty-five min utes. I have not felt this way for tweutv-five vears. I have a new vitality." "THE WAR RECORDS. "YvAsniXGTOx, D C, Aug. 8. Under the new management of Major George 11. Davis the work on the war records is progressing with great rapidity. The first Chickamauga volume, con taining all the Union reports, is set up and revised, and is ready for stereo typing. The second volume, contain ing the Confederate reports, is well along, and will probably be in type in ten days. The third volume, with the Union and the Confederate corre spondence, will follow at once. N. J. BERGMAN, Prop. (Successor to J C. Clinton.) Fine Chocolate Bon Bons AND CONFECTIONS.
