Main street needs bad. a sewer mighty Don't fail to see "Fun on the Bris tol," to-night at the opera house, Lawrence & Conner's Musical Com edy company arrived on the Colum b ia yesterday. Eev. A. LeKoy will officiate in the Baptist church, morning and evening, next Sunday. "When you go to Sealand note the fact that Morrison's hotel is a good place to get a meaL Reserved seals to see "The "Widow O'Brien" at 'ae New York Novelty Store thU morning. Ilwaco men are taking up their traps: many of them will fish at Gray's harbor this year. Thus far Clatsop county timber has escaped pretty well from" fire, though here and there the flames destroy some. To-night "Fun on the Bris tol," "The Widow O'Brien." Reserved seats for sale at the New York Novel ty Store. Ellensburg is being rapidly rebuilt Insurance adjusters figure the loss at $1,500,000, on which there was only $360,000 insurance. The carpenters of Port Towusend are striking for nine hours a day. Their wages are from 3 to $3.50 aud at present they work ten hours. Examine all silver money offered you and avoid having counterfeit coin rung in. Some from the Sound has been received that is below par. Seattle has taken $15,000 from the relief fund, and sent that amount with a car load of meat and her compli ments to her sister sufferer, Spokane Falls. The timber fever is bad in Tilla mook, the Headlight having over 200 timber laud notices. There is a mild form of the fever in Lane county, where the paper has 97. A New York paper asserts that "the best scientific authority teaches that the fish drawn out of water dies in ex quisite delight and not in agony. The air is to him what laughing gas is to man." What is claimed to be the highest price ever paid for real estate in Washington territory was paid on Monday last at Seattle. A lot 41$ feet wide sold for $42,000, over $1,000 per front foot. The shad seem to be getting the same rest accorded to the salmon. If not entirely fished ont during the next year or so, the shad will form an im portant additiou to the valuable food fishes of the Columbia river. In a long list of Portland contribu tors to the Spokane sufferers' relief fund, occurs among the 20's, 10's and 5's, "L. Zimmerman, 500 pounds sausage, $5." Is it possible that sau sage, ground hog, is only one cent a pound in Portland. If newspapers were printed on gold with ink made out of silver, and the subscription price put down to ten cents a year, some poor deluded speci men of humanity would kick because there was not a diamond set in every corner of each page. Since the 1st of this month M. ,Taa kola, F. Salovich, G. Pawletich, Jno. S. Abrams, Alex. Johnson, Jno. Onan, EL T. Anderson, Chas. M. Julie, G. M. Lode, B. Easmussen, and L. Paulson have declared their intentions to be come citizens of this republic. There was a big wedding, a big sup per, and and a good time generally at the opera house last -night, the occa sion being the marriage of Chas. Jones and Olga Nerds rom. The newly married couple have been tendered by the Lawrence & Conner troupe a box at the performance to-night A chemical engine would be a val uable adjunct to the Astoria fire de partment and would be found of great aid in putting out a lire on the lull sides, or elsewhere that a large engine and hose would find difficulty in reachiug. They have been tried and found to be of great value in other cities. Yesterday morning when the Thompson was leaving for Portland she blew her whistle to let go her lines, causing the horse of the Parker House coach to run away. Before he was stopped he ran into one of the posts of the Occident hotel veranda, knocking it out of place and doing some other slight damages. Since the 1st of the month marriage licenses have been issued to the fol lowing ceuples: G. Berceivich and Maria Milasich: August Thompson and Mary Mattsen: F. E. Palmer and Margaret O'Conner: Peter Cammiti and Marianna Bicevute: Hans Hal ten and Annie Woed: Mais Tyne and Elsa Tiuen: Chas. Jones and Olga Nord strom. A Seattle firm has brought suit against the company that sold it a safe, which was warranted to bo fire proof. The contents of the same were destroyed in the late fire; hence the claim for damages. This is a ah novelty in legal history, and the re sult will be awaited with considerable interest "I shall always hold Astoria in pleasant remembrauce," said Lieut Commander Uriel Sebree yesterday morning, "and if I could consult solely my own personal wishes I would prefer to continue my residence in this section." He has been ordered east, and will shortly exchange his four years of shore duty for "a life on the ocean wave." As many as 300 letters an evening are brought to the Telephone to be mailed. These in no way pass through the Astoria post office, and the As toria office loses just that much. Can not some way be devised to l.avo this serious leak fixed, so that Astona may have that credited where it rightfully belongs? Our free delivery will be indefinitely postponed if it isn't. Thos. Coleman otSkipanon came over on the Electric yesterday and repots that he found a bottle between the Cairnsmore and the lighthouse containing a slip of paper which he left here. It is water soaked, and on it is written: "Sunday, July 14th, '80. Died for want of breath: please bury me; good bye, forever." Most folks do die for want of breath. The de funct should have signed his or her name. The whole business looks fishy. The thousand dollars that Astona telegraphed to Seattle was only a drop in the bucket, regarding As toria's contribution to the fire los.-s of her less fortunate sister cities. Did you ever think up the large con tribution that Astoria has made to the reserve fund that goes to pay insur ance losses on this coast? For over twelve years this city has yearly paid sums averaging $125,000 a year, or nearly $1,500,000. This million and a half of dollars represents almost so much profit to the insurance com panies. It has helped pay many a loss, and in that sense Astoria's con tribution to the losses by fire all around us is a considerable sum. When The Astoiuan has to give away a shawl strap with its Sunday edition; when the streets running parallel with the river are twenty feet wider than at present; when the countv court holds i(.s sessions in the present Custom house; when the Co lumbia river eanners have a trade or ganization; when wealthy Astorians add to their wealth bv judicious ad vertising; when this and other desir able things take place; when that which is now in the future is at hand, and that which te to come is in the present, Astorians will agiee on what to do and how to do it Till then we will, probably, nj;ree to disagree, as usual. The August meteors mav be looked for on the nights of the Uth, 10th, 11th and 12th. The earth will then plunge through the August meteor zone, aud millions of cosmieal atoms, impinging against our atmosphere, will be set on lire by the concussion and descend, followed by a train of greater or less brightness. The moon at r near the full, will interfere with the exhibition, but the meteors are worth looking for, even if not seen under the Inst con ditions. These meteors are called Peraeids, because their radiant point is in the constellation Perseus, and they must be looked for in the north east They are seen to the best ad vantage late in the night, and may be known from other groups by their yellowish color, and medium velocity. Some of the Perseids are as large as Venus or Jupiter, and are of medium size, and many are so small as to be barelv disceruable. AnJ the Schooner (Iocs to Sea. The pilot schooner Oov. The State of Calif ornia sailed for San Francisco yesterday with the fol lowing freight from Asteria: 2,136 bdls shooks, 100 sks oysters and 20 tons assorted freight. The Petit brothers and B. A. Sea borg are building a steamer at Chi nook, which an Ilwaco. man says will be put on the route between there and this city when completed. Captain Smith, of the bark Nauti lis, reports that when off Cape Berk ley, Galpago Tslauds, a sea serpent was seen about thirty yards from the A-essel. The captain estimated the sement's lencth at eiehty fet It was about as large around as a barrel in the thickest part The head was shaped liked a snake's, with a bunch or ridge on the extreme end of the upper jaw. The head was about three feet in length, and about two feet back of the head was a mane of hair. The captain and mate loaded two bomb guns and banged away at him, and for about fifteen minutes there was quite a circus, the serpent lashing the water with his tail and running his head out four or five feet. At last he ran out his head, whisked around, and sank dead. PERSONAL MENTION. If. B. Thielsen arrived from San Francisco on the Columbia yesterday. K. E. Jackson and wife, who have been visiting friends for a week, re turned to Goldendale last evening. J. D. Byles, of the O. E. k N. Co., was in the city yesterday, and con tributed $531, on behalf of the com pany for sundry street improvements. Sewei-s In Tncoma. The following from the Tacoma Ledger will give an idea how the sew ers are constructed in that city: "I see the Pacific aveuue sewer is but fourteen inches in diameter. Why is it you do not have to make use or large sewer mains as in other cities?" "There are two reasons. First, the elevation of the property to be drained; and second, the fact that the sewer system is divided up into com paratively small sections. The time is coming, however, when we shall need one large sewer. It will have to be a big one, too." "It will have to bo constructed at the foot of the bluff, and run along the water front, or near it. All the small sewers from the various sections of the city will connect with, and the sewage from them will flow into this one big relieving sewer, which in turn will be extended north, along the wa ter front as far as well say as far as the Pacific mill where its contents will be emptied into the bay without creating a stench or being offensive to anyone. What Astoria Lost This Sensi.n. There's a story told of a Montana man, who said as he rode through a wood where tho mast lay thick on the ground, that he lost $5,000 by not having hogs to eat that mast up. J. M. Partlow. of East Portland, gives the Orcgoniaua census of Long Beach camp. He summarizes: Females 3,217 Males 1,308 Number hotels 3 ' batcher shop3 " restaurants " barber shops " beeves butchered daily. . Pounds flour consumed daily " sugar " " ... " butter " ... Gallons milk " " .... 1,500 300 250 150 I have kept no account of such prod ucts as eggs, potatoes, cabbage, etc., but by the above you will see Pacific county reaps a rich harvest from the people of Multnomah. All this and twice as much addition al, at Clatsop beach, were there a railroad from Astoria seaward. A thousand dollars a day for 100 days in the year, brought in in ready cash, is not to be sneezed at. "Weak and weary" describes the con dition of many people debilitated by the warm weather, by disease or overwork. Hood's Sarsaparillais just the medicine needed to build up and strengthen the body, purify and quicken the sluggish blood, and restore the lost appetite. The parents of young Hill, one of the Lebanon switch train wreck ers, have removed from Astoria to this city, arriving yesterday. Al bany Herald,!. ' , Eupepsy. Fruit tree swindlers are again in festing this country. The scheme now in hand is to furnish the farmer with so many dollars' worth of trees- say $500 free of charge. The farmer is to plant and take proper care of these trees and to deliver to the agent one half their profits for ten or twelve years. But if the farm is sold during this time the trees are to be paid for at the price agreed upon; and as evi dence of good faith the farmer gives his bond to this effect for the amount. So far there is no fraud, but in a short time a man comes along, admire.-, the appearance of the farm and lrits to buy it. The price is finally agreed upon, and the farmer is to furnish a clear title to the land. Of course the bond has been recorded, and to secure the sale is promptly paid. And after the fruit tree agent has been dis pensed with, the farmer turns to his supposed purchaser, but, alas! the bird has flown, and he goes home a sadder if not a wiser man. Mow Soiiip Papers Get "NVwi." Yesterday morning the Examiner furnished a characteristic example of how news is dished up by a certain class of self-styled "enterprising news papers. On Friday the Alia pub lished a short article about Mr. Ken taro Kaneko, the gentleman com missioned by the Japanese govern ment to inquire into the workings of constitutional legislation in other countries, and stated that Mr. Kaneko would arrive on the steamer Peking, which was duo in this port on Satur day. The Examiner took this article aud "faked" from it an alleged inter view with Mr. Kaneko. As a matter of fact, the City of Peking did not arrive in the bay of San Francisco till 7:45 yesterday morning, some four hours after "the Examiner's bogus interview was printed. Tins is on a par with the issuance of an extra con taining an alleged account of the Sul-livan-Kilrain fight two hours before the men entered the ring. S. F. Alta, ;'.
