A gray haired Danish couple, Herrmau Peterson nnd his wife Christiana, are resting in Castle Garden after walking all the way frctn Pittsburg. 'lhe uant logo back to Denmark.. ' The old couple came from Hmu bnrg three years ago. Then the t traveled away out west to live with their married daughter, a furmei t wife at Okalla, Nebraska. After two . and a half years their son in-law had his nrm-cufc offbv a reatiinir machine. ! and he was no longer able to take j care of the old folks. The home was broken tip and the old people were thrown on their own resourced. They decided to go back to their old home in Denmark, but they wete 5,000 miles from there. '1 hu people of Okalla raised a subscription and gotjtogether enough money to bay them tickets to Chicago. TLeu tLey fixed up n basket of eatables for the old folks and gavo them S-i tt buy food with in Chicago. The aged Dane kept the $1 iuster.d of buying anything to eat with it, and closed a contract with a Chicago railway company to take him and his wife to Pittsburg in a freight car for 4. They reached Pittsburg a month ago penniless aud without food. Then the gray-haired man of GS. and his wife of 67, started to walk from Pittsburg all the way to New York. It is 500 miles by the shortest railway route. As the highways run it is G00 miles. They set out on foot and slept in fields on the roadside. On stormy nights when rain poured down, farm ers let them sleep in their bams. They had shelter on the month's jour ney only when it rained. Frequently Ihftv were refused food and some times they had to walk many miles, weak trom uunger ana aimosc rnm ishing. At last they got to the Orange mountains and saw New York. They walked over the Jersey meadows on a railroad track to Jersey City, crossed North river to New York and went directly to Castle Garden.- The old man looked very neat after so long a journey. As he told his story tears filled his eyes and the eyes of his wife. Superintendent Jackson says emi grants who have been permitted to enter the conntry are never returned by the commissioners. TJbe Danes in New York will probably look after the interest of the old couple. Shaken, Broiled and Drenched. Thesearotbroc participles of English gram mar. Asahel Cole took a very modest leave of this busy world, passing over the threshold of the Great Beyond siltn -st unnoticed by a people to whom lm name was once a house hold word. Yet he had established a valid title to a more lastiug fame. He was "the rather of the Republican party," the original, genuine, true progenitor of tho greatest giant among political organization?. Mr." Cole's convention which met at the town or Friendship, in Alleghany county. New York, in May, 1851, or ganized the new "Republican" party. It had a veiy modest beginning; it is i'Vimi related thai the convention which gave to the ui'.v organization its conquering name was held iu a ledroom. But the movement spread with lightning rapidity over the whole north. Within seven years the new i arh had elected aud installed a president in the White house, and witbiu oicven years it had liberated fo'tr millions of slaves, crushed the most gigantic rebellion of all history nnd saved this glorious union. Asahel Co!o did not always rtmiin true to the party, the father of which he claimed to be. His admiration for Horace Greeley carried him into the Democratic wilderness iu 1872, aud though ho returned to the Re publican fold, things did not run to suit his taste. Iu 18S-1 he sulked in his tent, and iu 1S87 he formally transferred his allegiance to the labor party. But the campaign of J8S8 resurreoted the first and only true political love of Hit old man, and he shouted for Harrison and Morton with the enthusiasm of a vig orous youth.
