ZJ Iw gattg gMfotfmt. ASTOEIA. OEEGON: SUNDAY..- .JULY 7, 15S9. LOVE YOUR ENEMIES. Occasionally "we hear it said of some good-natured, generous, -whole souled individual, "lie hasn't got an enemy in the world." How we pity the man who has to battle his way through life, and can do it without making an enemy. "When he has been gulled, swindled and imposed upon by those who are always ready to take advantage of good nature, how often he must feel ' like kicking himself or letting out the job to a friend. An enemv is about the most useful friend a man can have. It is evidence that he ha3 a mind of his own and stamina enough to earn out his own views. It begets a species of individuality, and at the same time reminds one if he has faults, (and we know none who haven't) that his enemy will pick them out, and very probably magnify them with as little compunction as he would a fish story. He enables you to observe that you have faults which might otherwise pass unnoticed and places you in a position where they must be shaken off or concealed, or else become a subject of gossip and comment amongst the friends of your enemy. Your enemy exercises a very great influence in keeping all your faculties on the alert. You are well aware what the consequences will be if you are not at your post or are caught napping. Another thing about it is that by having an enemy you are more likely to find out who your true friends are. No real friend will stand by and hear his friend maligned, par ticularly behind his back. He is quite likely to insist on proof of any in jurious statement, and there isn't even a truthful man who could un dertake to prove one-tenth of his as assertions. He could't afford the necessary time. Follow your enemy and you will find your friends. The next best thing to a good friend is an open enemy. Show us the man who has ever attained a high position by his own exertions, who hasn't an enemy. As the Hoosier said of the barrel of whisk, '"It's a good thing to have in a house where there's no milk." So it is with an enemy. If you want to encourage a feeling of self reliance and confidence in your own ability, cultivate an open enemy to remind you or your shortcomings. "We are rushing things these days. In commercial centers, the motto is "Hurry up!" Thousands are trying to crowd two days into one and suc ceeding. The speed of trains ,is pushed to the utmost limit of decent safety. One wire is made to send four and six messages at one time. Eleutric light prolongs the working days to twenty-four hours. Food is concentrated and whisky kills in half the time it used to. "We are born in haste, die in a hurry, and are buried on double quick time. Everywhere we hear, "Hurry this al6ng," "Don't detain me," "Noli me tangere, I must rush ahead." No expense has been spared to provide the swiftest and most sumptuous ocean ships. The -supperb new steamship, the City of Paris, of the Inman line, has now surpassed all previous triumphs in the magnificent series of trans atlantic races that have been going on. The whole world has watched the breathless rivalry be tween the majestic thoroughbreds of the deep with eager interest Now this ship has beaten the six days limit, making the trip in five days, twenty three hours aud seven minutes, the fastest lime on record. Everybody is saying just now, "What a superb and superlative sort of a boat is this City of Paris!" "Whv? Because she has beaten the record. Isn't that reason enough for a rushing man to day? Five days across the Atlantic and three days from New York to San Francisco is what everybody is praying for in New York. So everybody is saying "Build larger and stronger engines, put on the pressure, shovel in the fuel, carry more, hurry faster, and reduce the rates." This is the spirit of the limes. F;ist horses, fast trains, fast boats, fast mills, larger and faster papers, faster sermons and serv ices, faster theaters, and faster men and women. So we go. TIic ft civ 1) iscovery. You have heard your friends and neigh bors talking about it. You may your self be one of the many who, know front personal experience just liow good a thing it is. If you have ever tried it, you are one of its staunch friends, because the wonderful thing about it is, that when once given trial, Dr. King's New Discovery ever after holds a place in the house. If you have never used it and should be afflicted with a cough, cold or any Throat, Jjiing or Chest troublD, secure a bottle at once and give it a fair trial. Joy a prosperous druggist on the corner ot Stockton aud Market streets, in San Fraueisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling iu wealth the medi cine kings of the country. But various rumors having becu floating around to the effect that be has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to uucarth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, a great student of Bot any, located in this city. His practice was not extensive, and yet the few cases that came to him attracted uo little atten tion. His grcatsucccss seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders aud vitiated blood. He seemed almost infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much a mystery as himself, j After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all the prescriptions he had filled for the erratic doctor, he began a systematic analysis He discov ered running all through the prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiate J blood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetable extracts in digenous to Calif orn la so simple and so well known under home ly everj day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the art i ve principles Involved So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that lie had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements in u preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise the taste, and put It before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im .mediately the same stories came back of its astonishingeffects, and the mystery was solved, and the talk It has created -"lias already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in daily from all over the coast. And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. ft r Examiner. TelenuoiieLiodifici:; House. Itesfc Hpfis in town. Rooms tier nitiht 50 and 25 cts., per week S1.50.
