Hetrick, the newspaper man who attempted to commit suicide in the city workhouse yesterday, died in the city workhouse this morning at 11 o'clock. Every effort was made to save his life, but the flow of blood from the artery severed" in his ear could not be stopped. The body was embalmed to await word from his in Easton." This was Hetrick's second attempt at suicide. About two years ago he arrived in Kansas City from St. Joseph in his usual intoxicated condition. The news paper men attempted to sober him, and after wrestling with him for three days thought he was all right. Hetrick asked for a half dollar to get himself some thing to eat, and it was given him. In less than an hour a policeman who did not know him brought him to the St. Louis avenue police station dead dmnk. He was placed in a cell, and during the night made an unsuccessful attempt to kill himself, by cutting his throat. This attempt at suicide seemed to have a creat effect on him. lie Iett as soon as he recovered, for St. Joseph and denied to his friends that he had ever made tho attempt. About six months later he again showed up in St. Joseph and was given work on the Herald sol liciting advertisements for the New Year's edition. He remained sober for a month and in that time made $T00. With this money he came to KansaB City, although n pass had been secured for'him to Dayton, Ohio, and for a week he remained on a lordly spree. Erom this drunk he never lecovered until last Christmas, when he again got work on the Herald. The only way in which Hetrick could be sobered was by locking him up m a room. All his friends knew this, and an anecdote is told of Loyd Brezeo's attempt to do him n favor, lirezoe had just started the Detroit Evening Journal and knowHetrick of old. Hetrick hnpponod to bo in Detroit at the time and Jlrezee, who was badly in need of a good man, took him to n room aim locueu mm up. For three weeks ho kept him closely guarded, and even when Hetnok insisted that ho was en- tirelv well, the surveillanco was con tinnBd. "Het" was taken out for a walk every day, and dressed in a new suit of olothos he began to look like his former aelf. About threo weeks later, just as Brezee thought that Hetrick was in a fair way to recover, ho was caneu nurrieuiy awav and left the key to Hetriok's room in tho door. Hetriok made his way to the nearest saloon, and within an hour ho was on a desperate spree. Ho was generally harmless -when drunk, except that he was tiresome, but on this oc casion the remembrance that he hadn't had anything to drink for threo weeks Kfiemed to make him desperate. He broke up all the furniture in the saloon and shattered a handsome mirror. Then he-started for tho Journal office, an nouncing his intention of oleaning out tho office. Brezee was forced to buy him a ticket and send him out of town. One of tho richest jokes Hetrick told on himself was about an exporienco with StilsonHutchins of tho old St. Louis 2Y;nes. Hetrick had just returned from Jefferson Citv, where he had reported tho legislative proceedings for the Times. Hutchins was a member from St. Louis, and had about concluded that with care ful treatment "Het" could be made to keep straight, and determined to give him a soft berth on tho paper. The op portunity came about four weeks later when tho dramatic editor resigned. Hutchins called him to one side and told him the position would bo given to him. Forepaugh's circus happened to bo in town at the time and had just com menced a tour. "Het" went to the press agent and told him that he was dramatic editor of tho Times. "I told him he wouldn't get a lino in the paper," was the way Hetrick told the storyqn the Times office les3 than two weeks ago, "unless he would give me 100 tickets and an X. St. Louis was about the third town in wliirii a nerformance had been given that season, and the show people wanted a good notice. I got the tickets and the S10. and tnen 1 proceeded, to get urunir. I walked up and down Chestnut street in front of the Times office and gave every man I met a show ticket. Presently Hntchins came alone and I yelled at him 41 am the dramatic editor 01 tms paper, I said, 'and I'll be if all tho boys don't no to the show.' Hutchins wanted three tickets, but I told him I didn't have hnt three left and" I intended to use them nryself. Onco again I got fired, but he took me back again next daj" Governor Crittenden tells a story which well illustrates tho character of the Bo hemian. The governor and General Kossi were sitting in front of the Planters' House at St. Louis, a few years go, and Hetrick, who was well acquainted with both, carao along in his usual condition. Walking up to tho governor ho said: "Governor, I wouldn't take $9.90 for the bill I am going to get from General Rossi. Just watch mo work him." Then going over to where General Bossi was sitting he said: "General, you haven't got a saw buck about vour clothes, nave you Without further ceremony General Kossi handed him a 810 bill. "The general never goes back on Old Het," sang out the Bohemian as lie staggered awaj Hetrick inherited $7,000 from tho estate of an uncle who died in Pennsylvania n few months ago, but up to the time of his death had never received any of the money. Drunk or sober he would divide the last dollar with a friend. He was a remarkably brilliant writer, and his bio graphical sketch of General Grant for the San Francisco Chronicle, and report of tho Guiteau trial were among the best pieces of newspaper work ever done in tho country. Charity Abused. The Chicago contributors to the Johnstown fund sent the auditor of that city to the scene of distress to report upon the measure of relief needed. He reports that a sufficient amount is on hand to relieve all cases of distress, and governor Beaver con curs in this view. Out of this inves tigation comes the charge that what the Chicago Herald aptly calls "the tribute of civilization' is being used to dredge out the Conemaugh river, which is rightly held to be a misap propriation. The repair of material damage is a duty that belongs to Pennsylvania, the local authorities, or to the property interests effected.sucb as the Pennsylvania railway and the Cambria Iron works. To use money given to feed and shelter distressed humauitv in the restoration of the river channel, or other similar work, is not right. 5s&5aa 1 Safe and sure to regulate the bow els, Ayer's Cathartic Pills never fail to give satisfaction.
