Even a "July run" wouldn't bring the pack up now to anything like the figures of former years. The Ellensburg, AY,T., fire turns out to'be a very sad disaster. The loss ag gregates 2,000,000. Ellensburg is a much smaller place than Astoria, and a 2,000,000 fire here would be a sweeping calamity. The Ellensburg people need assistance. Yesterday morning while James Flynn was driving a team hauling dirt for street improvements, the horses got scared and ran away, smashing a section of A. Of the Alaskan salmon catch a San Francisco dispatch says: Latest ad vices from the Alaskan fishing grounds are of the most unsatisfactory charac ter. The Alaska Commercial com pany have received letters from the Karluk river under date of the 22nd of June, in which it is stated that so far the salmon catch has been exceed ingly small. All of the canneries at that point are running light, there be ing absolutely no run of fish. At the Commercial company's cannery there had been packed to date e,ldo cases, as against 25,235 cases during the same length of time last year. The salmon run on Kodiak island is wretched. Not a cannery has 8,000 cases packed. Last Friday morning third mate Hunter, of the steamer Oregon, was found helpless in his stateroom, at San Francisco. He had been ill for some time past. It was deemed ad visable to have him removed to St. Mary's hospital for medical treatment and care. On the way to the hospi tal Hunter expired, Deceased is well known to seafaring men on this coast. About five years ago ho was injured by a jam in the hold of the Oregon, which broke two or three rib3 and af fected his lungs. It is probable that this accideut hastened his death. De ceased leaves a wife and five children in Liverpool, England. He was about fifty years of age, and a native of the Shetland islands. The superiority of Pacific coast built steamers over those built in the east is being shown in the case of the sister ships, the Corona and the Po mona. The former was built at Phil adelphia, while the latter was built at the Union IronAVorks in SanFrancisco. AVhile they were both contracted for at about the same time, the Pomona was commissioned over six months be fore her rival reached there. On everv contest as to speed and capability the romona has outstnped the Corona, On trips lately made to San Pedro and return the Corona consumed 133 tons of coal, while the Pomona only used 105 tons, a saving of 28 tons, or $196, on the item of coal alone. Thus is the superiority of Pacific coast work demonstrated. For a fine Chicken Dinner, to-day, go to the Astoria Restaurant The best in the market, cooked in the best style and neatly served. PortlajoJ, July 6. John AV. Welch, the Astoria constable, and Peter Grant, sailor boarding house proprie tor, were arraigned in United States commissoner Paul R. Deady's court this morning, on examination. The two men were charged with taking Geo. Richie and Henry Gresford off the British ship Earl of Dunraven without legal permission or authority. From the evidence given it appears that Grant went aboard the vessel, when he met Richie and Gre3ford, who poured into his sympathizing ear a long tale of their sorrows and asked him to get them out of their trouble. Grant went ashore and meeting con stable AYelch told him of the circum stance. AYelch at once proceeded to the vessel and marched the discon tented men away without any one's assistance, Grant being at the time in the city and not near the ship. Ac cordingly the commissioner discharged Grant and held AYelch to await the action of the grand jury. Upon put ting up 250 security constable Welch was released. Said commissioner Deady concern ing the case: "It is not so serious an offence as it was at first represented to be. AYelch and Grant acted in good faith, and the former committed an offence only in not first procuring the necessary papers instead of taking the men up "town to let them get out a warrant." Bunko Kelly is not at all satisfied with the result of the examination, as Grant is the very man he wanted to prosecute. THB T. J. POTTER COMING. La3t evening port captain, J. AV. Troup left for the Sound to superin tend the final fitting up of the steam er T. J. Potter, which is to be brought around to the Columbia river. Capt. It is said that the Potter is a much more seaworthy vessel than the illfated A lasJcan audit is hoped the above named gentlemen will meet with bet tersuccess on this trip than the one which to them and others proved so disastrous. If the steamer is ready for putting out she will leave to-morrow in which case under ordinary circumstances she would arrive at Astoria next Mon day. CRnnXAIi MATTERS. Portland, July 6. The city de servedly had the reputation of being one of the most enterprising and ener getic in the Pacific northwest and the citizens are determined to maintain and deserve it.
