Co. has made a contract with the Pacific Con struction Co. to construct its road to a connection with the Willamette valley. This would be good news if the Construction Co. had the neces sary means to carry out its contracts. The company was organized to build the Portland & Willamette Valley railway, and has a capital stock of only 830,000, in 500 shares, the sub scribers being: Wm. Reid, 151 shares, J. M. Bower 146, J. W. Graham 1, W. 31. Watson 1, and D. N. Goldberg 1; and there has never been a dollar paid up! The responsibilitv of the company is certainly not a sufficient guarantee that the Astoria people will realize their wish, much as we should like to see our neighbors thrive. It looks verv much s if they had sold out to. and been swallowed by a very small concern. The statement of the Astoria papers tnat tne company was backed by a hundred millions, must be either "the outgrowth of a very vivid imagination or a wilful falsehood to induce the A. A- S. C. R. R. to part with valuable properly. The Pacific Construction company were unable, after the most persistent advertising, offering most favorable terms, to sell more than a small fraction of the Portland k Wil lamette Ry. bonds. Apparently the Astoria neonle liavo hppn oi Intliinl- that the contractors weie the Pacific Improvement Co., a California corpo ration, instead of the Oregon com pany. Journal of Oammerc,; June A WOMAN'S WAY. A Startling Business Proposition. Whcu Mrs. Fowlar, of 327 Ellis street! stopped iu at a leading city druggist's to ask what effect Joy's Vegetable Sarsapa rilla, would have in dyspepsia and sick headaches, she was assured it would re Hove both. She was so incredulous that the druggist gave her a bottle, not to be1 paid for unless it cured. The following is the convincing conclusien: San Francisco, Feby. s, 1SSS. Dear Sin: Notwithstanding my mis givings, Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla did nil that you promised. I had tried so marfy prescriptions that I had come to belicvo nothing would relieve my dyspep sia and sick headaches, but I have not had a return of cither since. You have my permission to make this public, for a remedy that will cure dyspepsia and pre vent sick headaches should be generally known. Respectfully, 327 Ellis street. Seyprai Young Americans. C. H.
