Cz-3 fa 8. $Mm. ABTOTtlA OREGON: FRIDAY. -NOVEMBER 1G, 183S. TE2 dismissal of Mr. Denny, the American adviser of the king of Corea, has been demanded by the viceroy, Li Hung Chang. Foun hundred men are required to take the great City of New York across the Atlantic and attend to the wants of her passengers. To-horbow Dutchmen will cele brate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from French domination, and the. re-establishment of national independence. Mrsa Steeling; an English captain in the salvation army, has been con demned to 100 days' imprisonment for converting children under ago at Orbe, in the Swiss Canton of Vaud. The marriage of Hon. Chas. S. Voorhees, the present delegate to congress from Washington territory, to Miss Fannie Belle Vajeau, took place last Wednesday in Indianapolis, Ind. He is more successful in love than in politics. The London Economist says: Af ter the death of Gladstone, home rule will have to stand on its own merits. Gladstone's present colleagues being inferior, nobody is able to predict who is to succeed him. His equals have all abandoned him. Atublic slave market" is'in full ac tivity in Cabul every three months, bringing their human wares by hun dreds from Kafristau. Girls fetch the highest price, and are sold by measurement of the hand, tho cost being from about 1 18s to 2 17s per hand. Fbom Lloyd's return for tho quar. ter ending September 30, 1883, it ap pears there is a remarkable increase in the amount of work in progress in the ship building yards of the United Kingdom. The number of vessels in the course of construction is 400, as .against 249 in'the corresponding quar ter of last year. . A baft of piles destined for Boston has been built at Norfolk, Ya. It is in six sections, strongly bound to gether, and the piles in each section are securely fastened with wires. The whole raft will be GOO feet long with 23 feet beam, and a draught of 7 feet, so that it may go through tho canals from Norfolk, whence it will bo towed to Boston by sea. The "silk manufactory of North ampton, Mass., has tho deepest well ia this country that is, it is 3,700 feet deep and eight inches in diameter, but at the depth of 150 feet from tho surface a sedimentary sandstone was struck, which continued the whole depth, and water was never obtained. At St. Louis there is n well 3,108 feet deep, which yields an abundance of sulphur water. imiiu i Bishof Foss, of the Methodist church, was tackled a few days ago by a prominent prohibitionist who wished to convert him to his theories. Finally, in desperation the prohibi tionist said: "Well, Bishop, answer me this question honestly and fairly, and it we dont agree on that I'll let you alene: Now, if you saw u mad dog in the street, snapping at every body in his path and dooming them to a hor rible death, what would jon do? Would you try to restrain hita and capture him alive, orwonld j on not rather shoot him dead?" "Well," said Df. Foss, meditatively, but with conclusive firmness, "if I had been blazing away at him for thirty ears without hitting him, I don't know but what I would try the other plan!" The act of incorporation of the Nicaragua Canal company passed the legislature last Tuesday. It is tho same aot which was introdued in tho U. S. senate last session by Edmunds. Acting on the advice of Edmunds who drew the bill, tho parties inter ested in the enterprise decided to ask the Vermont legislature for a charter. Several of the incorporators named in the act are Vermonters, including Frederick Billings and Col. Franklin Fairbank. The gentlemen named ap peared before a joint legislative com mittee last week to testify concerning the proposed measure. The promr ters of the enterprise stated that they were all ready to begin actual work on the canal as soon as the charter is obtained. The dominant question in the political contest just ended was the preservation of the protective system which has' so successfully established the manufactures of this country by protecting them against foreign com petition. President Cleveland made that the issue in his December mes sage, and after a "vigorous discussion, he suffered a decisive defeat by losing all but one of the four north era states which in 1884- helped to elect the Democratic candidate. When the system upon which the prosper ity of the northern states was founded was assailed, an irresistible tide of public opinion aroso which over whelmed all opposition. Tho result is one which justifies the expressions of joy which are heard from infant manufactures ' in all parts of the country, not alone in the northern states, but in some portions of tho south also. To be sure those por tions of the south in favor of a pro tective policy are not at present large enough to enforce attention to their needs, but they are growing in im portance and the industrial changes that are taking place in the south will I before many years greatly change the political situation in that section, and eradicate, to a great extent, the sectional feeling which is so much re sponsible for that undesirable combi nation known as the solid south. When the manufacturing interests in the south are properly developed the line between the north and south will disappear and the whole country will be united in a community of com mercial and manufacturing interests, .There will be little more tariff dis cussion in congress except as to details of tariff revision, which may be to tho advantage of tho conntry. Facts which have been established by an experience of twenty-five ypars will not give place to theories. Kowto Cook IlusbauiU. Miss CorsoD Baid in the Baltimore cooking school that a Baltimore lady had written a receipt for "cooking hus bands, so as to make them teudor and good." It is as follews: "Mske a clear, steady fire out of love, neatness nnd cheerfulness. Sot him as near this as seems to agree with him. If he sputters and fizzes do not be anxious; some husbands do this until they are quite done. Add a little sugar in the form of what confectioners ca!lkisso3, but no vinegar or pepper on any ac count. Do not stick any sharp in strument into him to see if ho is be coming tender. Stir him gently; watch the while, lest he lie. too Hat and close to the kettle and become useless. You cannot fail to know when ho is done. If thns treated, you will find him digestible, agreeing nicely with you and the children, and he will keep as long as you want, un less you become careless and set him in too cold a place." The Verdict Unanimous. W. IX Suit, Drugcibt. Bipi.us. Ind., testifies: "1 can recommenil Klectric Bitters as the very best remedy. Every bottle sold has elven relief In every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured or Kneumatism or 10 years' standing. ' A li.alinni Unm J.tinnl.f TYnlli tlln Ohio, affirms: "The best selling medi cine I have ever handled in my 20 years' experience, is Electric Bitters."
