The county court met yesterday and adjourned to ten o'clock this morning. The newspapers in Portland are making tremenduons efforts to sup pressthe smallpox. County clerk Trenchard issued a marriage license to Albert Palmer and Lulu Hisel yesterday. J. M. Bacon, the Oregon Oity post master, who has held the offioe since Nov. 9, 1863, has been relieved by E. D. Kelly. Over in Seattle they complain of interrnDted passenger travel being by drays mired along the line of the cable car track. The steamer Puritan arrived in rrom uraya naroor at b o'clock yes- teraay auernoon, Having left mere at 8 o'clock in the morning. The remains of the late Archbishop Seghers arrived at Esquimault on the Tlietis Wednesday morning and were to be interrod yesterday. Some of the inland papers deny the existence of any smallpox to speak of, and declare that what there is, if any is "under control," whatever that is. Tho Al-Ki and Michigan crossed out, the A. B. Field left for Tilla mook with A. B. Hallock and freight for that port, and the Alliance came in, yesterday. The keen northeast wind quieted down towards evening yesterday, and the temperature sensibly moderated, but at2:30thi8moruingafresh breeze was blowing from tho cast. Ohehalis county sports amuso them selves by shooting tho insulators from-the-telephone lino. The com pany offer a prize of 350 for the ap prehension of the shooters. The electric light lamp at the cross log of Third and Lafayette streots, accidentally took a tumble last night, whioh aocounts for its failure to illn--.minate that portion of the city. Arrangements have been made for thoroughly warming the opera house this evening. So there need be no fear of having the pleasure of listen ing to Abbott marred by a chill. Bettor get vaccinated because the smallpox has gone north, south and east, and it may try to go west, al though the splendid climate of As toria does much to insure our safety " from disease. A friend who was in yesterday says he don't charge anything for the ad vice, but he thinks medicines taken internally aro most likely to produce beneficial results, because they have the inside track, so to speak. Lumbermen report the California 1 market rather slack and it is said to be the intention of some of the large 'lumber manufacturers to reduco the supply -till it is equal to the demand, .aud so be able to maintain prices. A basket.sooial will be held at the Norwegian-arid Danish ohuroh, upper Astoria, Saturday evening flov. 1, 1833, at 7:45 a. u. A good program, including speaking and singing, has beea prepared and a good time is ex pected. Everybody is invited. The hdies wilt plense bring a basket along. The Jdanzanua was up the river above Tongue Point yesterday, and the water was so rough and choppy that Bhe bad to tow the light keeper of beacon No. 4, opposite Harring ton's Point, to the beacon. She leaves for Tillamook rock this morn ing with supplies and a segment casting for tho hoisting crano on the rosk. The present cold snap makes fires desirable so it would be well for everyone to inspect their fines and sea that there are no dangerous open ings in them through which fire may be communicated to the wood work or other inflammable material. Chief engineer Snyder is looking after the matter as much as possible, but each individual should be a committee of ono on bis own premises. The strong northeast wind jolted thingB up lively along the dock yes terday. Clinton's pile driver boow. moored at the foot of Cass street, butted Denny Curran's Whitehall boat to its destruction and damaged -the government boat also. The steamer Novelty also received some at tention, getting off with her stem split. Better keep clear of n pile driver; it's a bard bitter. The new electric light lamps were put in place yesterday and burned with steady and undiminished bril liancy not being subject to thosr pro tracted attacks of syncope which so muoh impaired the value ot the old lamps. It is to be hoped that the mt lamps will continue as well as they nave begun, because tho sudden changes from dazzling light to over whelming darkness, fills the noctur nal pedestrian with distrust and dis satisfaction. The Now York young man to be dressed in the latest style, must wear a tailless dross coat made of invisible ribbed black worsted material more clinglike in its texture thau broad cloth. The length and cut is similar to the ordinary sack coat, but shaped to tho figure at the back. Tho collar is made of silk on the rolling pattern. The unmentionables to snit this coat have a broad aeam of black silk em broidery, representing garlands of roses or violets, and look so nice. Tacoma papers report the arrival iu that city of from twenty to thirty six car loads of wheat per day, and that there is still such a lack of trans portation facilities that they are com pelled to let some of the wheat go to Portland by way of the O. RiN. lines. Probably as soon as they get sufficient tranportation they will re lieve Portland of the trouble of hand ling the grain. But by that time the Astoria arid South Coast railroad will give the farmers a gravity line to run their wheat down ta the ocean on which will be cheaper than to send it over the backbone of the Cascades to the sound. The following, advised as a pre ventive of smallpox, is good most any time, and it followed will be of material benefit to health whether one is exposed to the disease or net: Live carefully and do not eat largely of heating victuals. Keep tho bow els in good condition. The blood should not be kept at too high a stage. The frequent use of lemons is recommended; oream tartar is also a (rood tonic and purifier. The use of liquor of any kind is not advisable, nor the excessive use of tobaoco, but those who care for nice ripe fruit will experience no ill results. The best advice that can bo given to those who aro likely to be or have been exposed is to vacoinate early and often. It is the only true preventive. The others aro only assistants, preoaring the system that it may more easily with stand a siege of the dread affliction. PERSONAL MENTION. Capt. Olough is in the city. Prof. A. L. Francis expects to be in Astoria to-morrow. J. D. Hiceins is at Weston. Or., somewhat improved in health. m 1 Emma Abbott To-NIrIU There will be a large audience at the opera honso to-night to listen to Gou nod's grand musicof "Faust" rendered by the favorite prima donna Emma Abbott and artists, chorus and or chestra. It was in this opera that Miss Abbott achieved ono of her ear liest successes; and she treasures sacredly a little book in which Gou nod himself wrote a nattering criti cism of her impersonation of his he roine "Marguerita". Miss Abbott will be supported by Lizzie Annan dale, as "Siebel," with her superb contralto voice. Senor Miohelena, the gifted lyrio tenor, as "Faust," William Pruette, the famous bari tone, as Valentine, whilo Wm. Brod erick, with his rich basso voice, will sing the solo of "Mephisto." The world-wide reputation of these tal ented artists guarantees an unusual treat to those who attend. No Danger. There was a rumor of there being a fire at the school house iu diatriot No. 1, last Wednesday. As a matter of fact there was no fire, but in con sequence of n largo pitchy stick being put in the furnace a great volume of smoke was made which came through a crack m the chimney, and this gave rise to the rumor ot a nro in tne school house. The walls of tho chim neys were at first made too thin and they have oracked in some places, but the directors have commenced build ing another thickness of briok around tho flues so as to strengthen them and make them effectually tight. The repairs are expected to be oompleted so as not to interrnpt'school on next Monday, aud parents need not feel the slightest uneasiness in regard to the safety of their children on ac count of fire in the school house. The town gossips are now telling this story ot Mrs. S. Van Bensselar Cruger, wife of. the Republican nom inee tor the office of lieutenant-governor. She is an acknowledged soci ety leader, and her parlors aro eager ly sought by aspiring young men about town. -Among frequent callers was a well known, good looking young man, whom bait the feminine part of the upper 400 have lavished smiles whWh wonld easily turn the head ot one less experienced. This lucky, individual had gone to nay bis' respects to Mrs. Crucrer. A servant.bad disappeared, above stairs with 1113 card;- when a remarkably, pretty-housemaid entered the draw ing room where' the young man was waiting, and proceeded to dress the lamps. The girrwaa so pretty, and her trim. figure so appealing in a long and snow white apron, that the gal lant threw prudence to the winds and oaught her in his arms. He was in the aot of bestowing sundry violent ca resses upon her tempting mouth, when a softly modulated voice, speaking in the calmest 'way interrupted bis elysium and turned bis bot blood to ice. Mrs. Uxngers tall and elegant figure was standing in the doorway. She had come down sooner, perhaps, than was her wont, or maybe the kisses bad been so sweet that the young man had lost traok of the flight of time. ' "Bridget." said the voice, "have I not always told you that you were to receive your company m the kitchen?" Bridget fled. The ardent gallant did not raise bis eyes again, and when his senses told him that the coast was clear he found the front door with out difficulty. Nowadays bis card is missed from Mr. Oruger's orowded receiver. New York Sun. A 'Warning. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that mora persons die from dis eases of tho Throat and Lungs than any other. It is probable that every one, without exception, receives vast numbers ot Tubercle Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into lifo and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and if .allowed to con tinue their ravages, they extend to the lungs producing Consumption and to the head, causing Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous 'and if allowed to proceed will in timo cause death. At the onset you must aet with prompt ness; allowing a cold to go withont your attention is dangerous nnd may lose you-your -life. As soon as' you feel that something is wrong with your Throat.
