JOHNSON, BROM. n W JOHN A U b ' MONTGOMERY Q Has a First Class sj u - STOCK. W .... - White House Pets. Nellie Arthur had a spotted In dian pony for the apple of her eye. Mrs. Pierce was very fond of the black nag that her husband rode. Mrs. Monroe brought the first white rabbit to the national prem ises. Harriet Lane had a large stag hound that was presented her in England. "Dolly" Madison's particular Det was a fine saddle nag. At Montpelier she had a pet sheep. Mrs. Adams had a great goldfish, and, one of a bluish tint, sent her by a New England sea captain. Mrs. Hayes had a magnificent imported Japanese cat that was presented to her by a naval officer. Martha Washington's chief pet was a beautiful green parrot. Mrs. Washington was also very fond of & fallow deer. Mrs Grant had a "strawberry roan" cow that was a superb milk er and supplied her table with milk and cream. Mrs. Bliss, president Taylor's daughter, who presided over the White house until her father's death, had a splendid white owl. Miss Cleveland's pet while at the White bouse was a beautiful rose which she found in the con servatory and which now bears her name. An eagle occupied a cage at the mansion for a part of president a illmore s term, a gift from a po litical admirer, and the noble bird was often fed-by Mrs. Fillmore. Mrs. Jackson never presided at the White house, but a largo black and white coon that had been caught when young and trained by one of her faithful slaves had the run of the household. The flesh of a white fish is of a bluish white, but changes when boiled or broiled to pure orange white, from whioh it derives its name. It is a member of the salmon family, and found princi pally in North America, in the great lakes from lake Erie to the Arctio sea, in lake Champlain and in the smaller lakesof Canada con nected with the St. Lawrence on the south side. Its general ap pearance is shad like, and in Borne localities it is called lake shad. They are caught principally by gill nets. A doctor in an Ohio town who lives on a street leading to the cemetery has a reversible sign. Usually the sign presents his name and office hours, but when a funer al passes he turns it over, and then the following legend is . dis played: "Not my patient; I cure all who follow my-directions." Across the Continent. From the Atlantic seaboard dally Journey thousands of Immigrants, hosts of enterpris ing tourists for pleasure, occasional Euro pean seekers for material for books on America, multitudes ot hardy native and foreign agriculturists and artizans, all eager, all expectant, but all unaccustomed to the ninr Ailmittt rt vha frrintla nnd all inff fr . unless protected with a medical safeguard 10 encouuier maiana, me cniei ioe u neaim In regions uewly cleared and opened up for settlement. "1 don't say marriage is a fail ure," said Adam, candidly, as he" sat down on a log just outside- the Garden of Eden and' lookedhun grily at the fruit on the other side of the wall, "but if I had remained single this wouldn't have hap pened." CARELESS MOTHEBS. Many motbewhave permitted their chjdren to die before their eyes when thoy might have been saved. Any mother who keeps house without a bot tle of Acker's English Baby Soother at hand, runs a risk which she may somo tlme regret. It has saved the lives of thousands of children, and is doing so every year. J. W. Conn, Druggist. An Idaho sheep-herder cot lost last week for three days. He cut the throats of some lambs and drank iheir blood to quench his thirst. A real, live princess keeps a millinery store in Fifth avenue, New York. BOW BSCTOBS COXQl'ER DEATH. Doctor Walter K. Hammond says : "Af ter a long experience I have come to the conclusion "that two-thirds of all deaths rjonv.couRhs.pueunionla and consuia,,tun, might bo avoided if Ack ers Enit-ish Cough Remedy wore only carefully used in time." The Weekly Press (Philadelphia) has been collecting through its correspondents' some interesting data as to big trees in various parts of the country, and measure ments of remarkable trees in four teen states are published in the number for August 22d. Among these arc a live oak in Marion county, Fla., with a trunk circum ference of 31 feet, and a spread of branches of nearly 139 feet; a sugar maple in Bradford county, Penn., with a girth of 16 feet, and branches spreading 83 feet; an elm in Shinnston, W. Va., with a girth of 27 feet 3 inohes, a spread of branches "of 125 feet and a total height of 110 feet; a chestnut in Lancaster county, Penn., with a circumference of 25 feet 3 inches, and branohes spreading 88 feet; a sycamore in Wabash county, 111., with a girth of 28 feet, and a sas safras at Johnsonville, Penn., with a circumference of 13 feet 6 inches, 3 feet from the ground, a spread of branches of 35 feet,' and a total height of 46 feet. To these may be added the big trees of California, from thirty to thirty-six feet in diameter,, and from 275 to 450 feet in height, be side the lately discovered giant of the Sierra, whioh is said to be about fifty feet in diameter, but which is not yet fully authenti cated. The oldest and largest tree in the world is a chestnut, near the foot of Mount Etna. The circum ference of the main trunk is 212 feet. George W. Childs has, at his country seat, n6ar Bryn Mawr, a grove of trees, each of which was planted by some famous person. General Sherman planted a pine tree there on Wednesday, Penn sylvania's Arbor 'day. Mr. Childs greatly regrets that he has not a tree planted by Sheridan. The late lamented general intended to plant a tree at Wooton, last year, when Mrs Cleveland went through that ceremony. A Remedy In Kidney Affection. 'Sly kidneys were'so affecte'l I have been competed to get up as much as ten times In one night. I tried Simmons Liver Regulator and my condition has improved so m cli that 1 hardly ever feel any of my old trouble.'" W. Johnson, E-spn ss Agent, Macon, Ga. The English salt trust has lost no time in driving the market. Already, as reported, the price of common salt in England has been advanced from 60 cents to $2.25 a ton, while that of the export salt has been shoved up to $3.75 a ton, a raise of $1.75 a ton. It is customary to say that wrin kle scome from worrying, but the truth is that most of them come from laughing. To know how to laugh is just as important as to know when to do it. If you laugh with the sides of your face the skin will work loose in time and wrinkles will form in exact accord ance with what kind of laugh you have. The man who always wears a smirk will have a series of semi circular wrinkles .covering his cheeks. When a gambler, who has been accustomed to suppressing his feel ings, laughs, a deep line forms on each side of his nose and runs to the upper corners of his mouth. In time this line extends to his chin and assumes the shape of a half moon. A cadaverous person with a waxlike skin is very apt to have two broadly marked wrinkles, one running up from the jaw and the other under the eye. These meet at right angles at the cheek bone and look as though they formed a knot at the apex. The scholar's wrinkles form on .his brow, while the scheming politi cian's come round his oyes, where they look for all the world like the spokes of a wheel. It costs $22,000,000 to run a presidential campaign. Ifyousee Belva Lockwood trapsing around in an old bonnet next summer, you li know the reason why. POWDER Absolutely Pure.
