tj cy Ww a jtwrian. TUESDAY. ASTOBIA, OEEGON: ....JUNE 7. 18S7 It has baen computed that the death rate of the globe is 67 a min xite, 77,700 a day and 35,639,835 a year, and the birth rate 70 a min ute, 100,800 a day and 36,792,000 a year. The entrance to New York har bor isjso choked up that the disabled steamer JBritanhic could not get over the bar to a place of safety until part of her cargo had been discharged. Even the fish have become dis gusted with the conduct of Cana da and are flocking over to the coast of Mane. The waters about Bangor are reported fuller than ever this year of salmon. Dakota has more schools than any one of thirteen states, employs twice as many teachers as New Jersey or New Hampshire, and leads twenty-five states in the number of its banks. The postmaster at Shenandoah, Penn.,a place worth $1,700 per year resigned four weeks ago and at latest advices no application had been made for the place. The post office department is puzzled over this unprecedented case. TnERE is discussion in the state press about the opium law now in effect. As we understand it the main intent of that law was to bar the Chinese from any traffic in that drug and afford tangible ground for their legal prosecution. Several of the western barbed- r e .. i I and thus be convinced of its wonderful wire leuue muuui.aui.uici a tue uav .,,. rc nr ttimct'o Wam ns. uuiaui w yu n vif - ... u t? aiuii j TnE News says that since it en-' dorsed and began to advocate the prohibition amendment it is being boycotted. The Astokiax was the first newspaper to denounce and decry the boycott of the Ore gonian a year ago, and is equally prompt in opposing the boycott of the ifcxes. It has been through twoboycotts itself and said noth ing about its own troubles, but when such un-American practices are charged in public print it be comes every paper to oppose the principle. We do not believe in the practicability of prohibition nor in the intemperate zeal dis played by some of its supporters, but we are consistent in upholding the right of free speech. It is by discussion and free speech that these things are settled. That is the American way. We believe it to be the only right way. If a newspaper is unjust or mali cious or untruthful, or plainly in the wrong, it should be refused support and made feel its folly and know its duties; but this prohi bition question is a subject of pub lic discussion, just the same as the tariff, or any other matter of pub lic opinion, and any newspaper should be at perfect liberty to ex press its honest opinion unawed or uninfluenced by the "boycott." There's something about that word that is un-American; it breathes of cowardly despotism, and the practice should have no place in this land of the free. It is the fruit of bitter blossoms blown to us from across the sea and is an exotic that should have no room nor cause to flourish. Efia SjpHfiSJeP A Gilt for All. Two or three have failed and seven or eight are in a tight place. Manu facturing capacity has been too greatly extended. Citizen Train says that when he stopped eating meat, thirteen years ago, and began living on fruit and grain, he weighed 210 pounds. He now weighs 180, and as he is six feet in height, he thinks ho has the correct proportion. He has not been ill an hour sinoe he began fasting. TnERE are still a few theorists who justify polygamy on the ground that more women are born into the world than men, but the theory has long been exploded. August Bebel, in his remarkable work, recently translated into En glish, shows that in ten states, with a population of 250,000,000, the excess of females over males was over 2,500,000; and when we remember the extent to which men outnumbei women in the colonies, and the fact that in India there are 6,000,000 more men than women, the natural inference is that if the inhabitants of the earth were dis tributed according to the sexes men and women would be found to exist in about equal propor-lions. covery for Consumption, Coughs and uoiqs, win De, lor a limited time, given away. Yesterday's S. F. Chronicle says: "It is insisted upon by Chi cago & Northwestern officials that it is not the intention of their com pany to extend its line to a junc tion with the Oregon Pacific, and that the only extension in that di rection to be made this year will be to Fort Caspar, fifty miles west of Fort Fetterson, where it is go ing for coal. Such denials are never regarded as being in good faith, for leading corporations do not extend their lines under their own company name, generally in corporating anew. It is by such wheels within wheels that the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe reached Los Angeles, and the Union Pacific extended its road to Portland. The Oregon Pacifio people claim that they are extend ing their line eastward under Chi cago & Northwestern patronage, but there are those who are wicked enough to say that this announce ment is being made in order that the Oregon company may retain its credit with contractors and others to whom it owes untold SV.mj?" gSelBfSsyji fillet III tiffin Mil a eS a eg os3 o eaa2 &?
