The Trick" of the Adventuress-Pre tenses on Which They Ply Their Ne farious Trade Why a Broker Paid Fifteen Thonsand Dollar. (Xew York Special to Savannah Newb.l One of the most hideous pests of New lork is the female black- mailer. Many of them invade the j offices oi" lawyers and business men as agents for the sale of vari-j ous portable articles. Stories of their nefarious exploits are heaul on every hand, but they are sel dom published. Human nature is such that it is ready to believe the worst of mankind, and thus the man of spotless life and the woman of whitest sancity -by a strange and weird exigency, become, the unconscious confederates of the female blackmailer. These ad venturesses pretend to be widows of soldiers seeking a pension, or thej' are gathering subscriptions for some well known charity, or the' are selling books or works of art or stationery in fact, almost any pretense is used for the pur p6se of seeing- the -banker, mer chant or lawyer alone. ...It ma' seem surprising that a lawyer could be entrapped, but it has been done. The cae of Alex ander Hamilton is historical; He was entrapped by a voluptuous woman and acceded to some "of her demands for- money, but when she and her pretended husband went too far, he confessed tho whole matter in -public -letter, at the same time indignantly denying, that he had ever used his place as secretary of the treasury, which he then held, to further tho interests of the schemers. That letfer twitched the fangs from the ser-. pent's mouth, and Alexander Ham ilton died as he had lived, the idol of the people. - 'A young lawyer on Nassau street$"L.heard the other day, was victimized ""-by a woman who sold engravings. He had a large practice in civil "cases, but knew nothing of thejcriminal cases. The adventuress in this case was a handsome woman of thirty, well dressed and modest in demeanor. He subscribed, for the engravings, and she delivered them weeklv. After the third call the ci.Mks heard a dispute between the wom an and the lawyer in the" "private office. The woman's voice was angry and threatening; the lawyer, in a lower tone was pleading and expostulating. She left in a few minutes, apparently in a state of great excitement. The -lawyer, it was noticed, became nervous and preoccupied. The woman called every week for four niomhj?. Then the young lawyer consulted another in the criminal practice, and revealed the fact that at the third call, which the woman made for the purpose of leaving the en gravings, she had asked for" 100 asa gift. If he refused she:. would go tohis wife, to whom he had been married only two years, ai.ri tell her that she had been in tin habit of calling on him, -arjd that he had conducted himselt in an improper manner. He had at first refused to give her the.money, and had defied her to do her utmost. She left her address, however, and said that if she did not receive tho money by noon the next day she would carry her threat into execu tion. 'He was" in a quandary. Before twelve o'clock the next day he had decided that it would be better to pay tho money and he did so. A week later she calleHand demanded 825 a week as the price of her silence. He weekly paid it for about four months, and then called in the as sistance of a criminal lawyer, who at once sxmfc a detective to the of fice to await the arrival of the woman, who was to come that day. When the woman entered the de tective's head was bent over a desk in the outer office, apparently engaged in clerical work. He rec ognized her at once as an adven- turess well known to the police. (He allowed her to enter the law- i vop'o rrivot nffiop. crpf. Vipr wpplrlv blackmail and leave without a scene. When she stepped into the elevator he followed. She recognized1 him, with a blank look of astonishment. He did not ad- i. .l iu ua i. dres9 her until thev reached the streetr;and the other passengers were out of hearing. Then he J said to her: "'Veil, Mollie, I see you are at vour old tricks again, ain't you?" She did not reply. Then he ; added: "J win trouoie you to ! give me that S25 you have in your pocket. lhe woman gave it up at once. "iNow, said the de tective, "I'm going home with you.' "Where do you liver" i They took the elevated road and went to a handsome il.it uptown. The dcor was opened bv an o!d woman. aDnarentlv the woman woman's mother, and she also had l a servant. The suTrounuinss wore attractive; every thinjr had the tip-! pearance of a refined and respect-j able home. J ho detective said to the handsome o'd adventuress: "Now I am going to search the house for the money" you - have la ken from that man down town." "Oh! don't do that,"' she an swered. I will give -you all that I have." And she soon brought him about $90. Then the de tective left. lie knew that he could get no more, and that if-he' arrested her there woukF neces sarily be unwelcome publicity' for her victim. The lawyer was never: troubled thereafter. The same woman is still at work on other victims. Those who have been blackmailed do r.ot publicly com plain, and thus wommi of that class prey upon society almost with impunity. A clergyman up town paid blackmail for a long ttmq before he invoked the aid of j Ins. friends. A merchant paid blackmail once when a woman thrust herself into his private office and threatened to scream if he did not. He never paid again for he gave strict orders notrto admit the wom an. Man' merchants and bankers refuse to see a woman until he has stated her business in full to a clerk. , - ' -(Cdnlinuul on 1th imge.)
