CO fo gaUjj g&osfem. ASTORIA. OREGON: 8ATORDAY MAY 7, IS87 General Groaner is reported as a prominent Republican politician in Virginia. A general groaner in both parties would seem to come pretty near filling a long felt want. . Distillers report a surplus of whisky, thus illustrating how use less the action of some men who appear to "have taken a contract to drink it all up or down. Officers of Canadian fishing cruisers are ordered not to talk to newspaper men. Nothing under the sun can stop tho newspaper men from talking with the officers, however. ' Ten years ago, when Kaissr Wilhelm reached his eightieth birthday, he gave his doctor 837,- 500 Recently, when the aged monarch celebrated his ninetieth birthday he gave him 75,000. It is fair to assume that should the Germaruemperor attain the age of one hundred years his faithful medieal attendant will get $150, 000. Robert Ixgersoll is on deck again with 'advice" to working men. He says that no laboring manshould practise economy. He says that economy is a sign that a m in is contented with his wages, and no man should ever admit that. Then Bob went and cut off some interest coupons off that hun dred thousand dollars in govern ment bonds that Dor3ey, of Star Route fame, gave him for clearing him. Smart fellow, Bob, but a little diaphanous in some things. It does look unfair the way wealth is divided in this world. " Here is one man with a million dollars, and another with only ten cents. Here is Astoria with seventy-seven inches of rain on hand and underloot -and more coming, and California, our neighbor, sit ting around in deep despondency crying for just one little shower. The reformers who are going to divide the dollars equally among, the sons of men will doubtless no tice how unfair is the division of t rain, and improve upon the meth ods of Divinity. . ' " 1 Growing wheat in England is growing ruin, if we may i ely on Samuel Rowlandson, who recently gave details of his twenty-two years experience at Newton Mor rell, near Darlington. Bringing costs down to. the conditions ol 1886, he estimates the expenses of wheat after fallow at 8 2s. 2d. per acre, and of wheat after clover at 5 2s. 6d. per acre, or on an aver age of 6 12s. 4d. per acre. The rent is taken at 1 4s. per acre .tithe, 3s. 6d.; rates, 3s. From 1879 to 1885 the average price per acre received for the graiu was 5 3-. 8d., showing a loss of 1 8s. 8d. Mb per acre. The executive committee of the national labor party is in ses sion at Indianapolis, Indiana The plan of organization for the .the party throughout the country has been adopted, Every sugges tion toward the adoption of Henry George's theories is given the cold shoulder. Guelle, tho secretary, says: "We propose to go on with our organization and perfect it if possible. Within sixty days a.fter the Cincinnati convention we had 900,000 members. Now we think we have fully l,2OQ)0O. . It is par ticularly strong in Kansas, Ne braska and other western states. It will cut a very prominent figure in the national campaign next year." At San Francisco the collector of the port has received advices from Washing: on, stating that tbe treas ury department intends to dis patch the revenue cutierHush to Alaskan waters, to guard the seal islands. -She will probably leave there June 1st. A Washing ton special says: Secretary Fair child, in conversation, said that "W-cRblnet'hsd thus far been un able to reach any decision regard ing protection to bo extended by the government to tho seal fisher ies in Behring sea. Secretary Bayard is understood'to favor the three-mile limit proposition, sim ply as ho wishes it applied in the controversy between the United States and Canada over the fishery question. A circular is received from a Prof. Loisette, who offers for a trifling fee to tell us how to culti vate our memory. Happy thought; how many, beautiful things we would like to remember, to hold, photograph and hang up on thb walls of Memory's picture gallery! But they slip away and pass into the shadow. Perhaps 'tis as well. The ability to remember those things night involve and include the faculty of remembering much that we gladly forget. The sneer, tho sharp, unmerited reproof, the misunderstanding, the prejudice and unjust criticism, all those things we gladly forget. "Chords that vibrato sweetest pleasure thrill tho deepest notes of woe." Per haps the possession of Prof. Loisette's process would be to us an added unhappiness; as it is, we have the fortunate facility of forgetting the mean. things offered, and if, occasionally, a precious memory escapes with the poison ous band of baleful brothers, let it go; there are many other bright and valuable memories that remain to flash gratefully in tho sunshine of life. The S. F. Bulletin of the 5th, says: "ine report of grain in spector Gove for May 1st is a sur prise to some. It was known that only eleven cargoes cleared in April, but it was not expected that stocks in the warehouses after such depletion would be be larger than before. Least of all was it ex pected that they would be larger than in the beginning of any pre vious month this year. But such is the fact, to which is to be added the further statement that larger stocks are in the city warehouses than on the first of any month since July, 188G. It has been charged that certain parties are bulling the wheat market. The present month will settle this question with reference to buyer season contracts, as they will all be off by May 31st. The readi ness of the bulls to take wheat with circumlocution of any sort is not what tho bears expected. Now that the bulls are wetting wheat for which they hitherto simply held contracts, it is of interest to know what they will do with it. There is riot a market in the world to which they can send 'it without prospective loss, based on current quotations, cost of freight and insurance. If they hold it in warehouses after June 1st, it will be subject to another season's storage charges. The fact is, the wheat surplus in the state to-day is sufficient to load fifty ships, and the. ownership is well concentrated. There are 65 dis engaged ships in port ready to .transport this wheat to Europe. These ships can carry 150,000 tons, but there are not over 100, 000 tons to spare. This ought to be sent abroad lor the sake of giv ing employment to the idle fleet now in port, put the market in shape and make the now crop p predated. It is t.ardly probable, however, that this course will be pursued. Those who havo been buying up all the wheat in sight profess to have great confidence in the future of the market. They doubtless hold stocks with a two fold purpose, of depressing the price of the new crop and the en hancement of the value of the whole supply- in the end. The sun dawned this morning upon deserted wheat wharves through out the great states of California and Oregon, for the first time in several years. What makes the fact all the more significant is the further -fact that considerable wheat left for shipment will not be needed the remainder of the current crop j'ear. At least 100, 000 tons are at tide water in Cali- fornia, and we do not know how much more there is in Oregon. Three uncleared ships are m the stream, all with outward cargoes. There is no vessel at Portland un der wheat engagement, nor any at San Francisco either for old or new crops yet. There are about seventy-five ships here nd in the Columbia river available for wheat charter." " Famous "Women. Madame Trebelli, the greatest of living contraltos who has traveled extensively, in fact visited every county andcity of note in the world, has just departed from the slope of the Pacific, and often exniessing the greatest almiratio-i for the beauty and grandeur of our scenery and the delightful mildness of our climate, left the following written note as a living expression of her opinion in the hands of a Portland druggist, the original of which can be seen on de mand. Portland, Or., April 6, 1837. Dear Air. Wisdem: I have tried your "Bobertine," and it gives me much pleasure to say that it is excellent for the complexion, being one of the best articles of the kind I have ever used. Be lieve me, yours sincerely. Z. Tbebslli. If any further proof of the excel lency of this article is reqnired oall on Messrs. W.E. Dement & Co. of Asto ria, Or., who, for the small sum of fifty cents, will produce evidence that will satisfy the moat skeptical and fastidious and give you a beautiful picture card for the trouble of en quiring. Some Cuss Him This Week Some Next. A newspaper or an editor that peo ple will nottalk about are rather bar ren concerns. The editor who dis cbarges his duties faithfully need not expect that all his readers will ap plaud his work some will enss him this week and those who do. not will cuss him next. His only course is to eo ahead and say what he believes. He ought to bo sure and believo something for in this age people ab hor men without opinion. Qalveston News. An End to Bone Scraping.
