Using Agency of ilessrs. HHBER Removing the Engine House. To the Ed;tor of The AsxesrAN: ( Referring to the item in this) morning s Asto'eIan which speaks of the talk of locating the engine house of Astoria Co. No. 1 in the street between blocks 55 and 63 of McClure's Astoria that is, be tween J. Strauss' New York Nov elty store and Thos. Graves' saloon, you say among other things, that "it is said, that some years ago the council vacated that part of the street," etc. You might have said also that the private party claim ants, "it is said," have notified, verbally, members of the council that the' entirely object to having said engine house located there. Of course any citizen wonld object to locating an engine house, 25x 50 in size, 35 feet high, in the 50 feet wide street immediately in front of his store or building-, thereby increasing the insurance rate on his building and contents, and almost wholly blockading tho street. Therefore that such par ties, owning buildings or doing business on either side of a street, would very naturally, and with reason, object to any such location of an engine house. But in this particular case the partres, objecting because they pwn the street, and m claiming the street because the council vacated it some years ago, are getting a little too previous. It is doubtful if tho records show, or any citizen can tell, when, or in what .manner, tho council ever vacated that part of Con comly street. Some 3'ears ago, as many ol us remember, and as tho records show, the council maintained with considerable vigor the rights of the city to the north end of Cass street near and on each side of its junction with Concomly, in that immediate vicinity; and if it va cated Concomly street between blocks 55 and G3 (which is the portion referred to), it did a vory foolish thing. That is very doubt ful. And if it did then the'legis lative assembly had good roason for putting the fee in the city of all streets recorded in the city, be tween high and low water of the Columbia river, as it did in the city charter, (see chapter VIII, sec. G7 of city charter passed O -t. 26, 1876). "Whether that part of Conco sily street is recorded or not can be easily ascertained by examining not merely maps at the city hall, but by examining the records at the county clerk's office also. There it will be found that north west quarter of block 55, one hun dred feet square, was sold by .Mo Clure, the original town proprietor away back in 1850, and bounded on the north 100 feet by Concomly street,-that on his map Concomly street is rocorded there, in that portion of it, marked, however, as "reserved for wharfing purposes," (not for engine houses or any oth er superstructures); and McClure's successor, the late Judge Olney, hi 1867, or thereabouts, had a map made and printed showing Con comly street north of block 55 and adjacent to it, and much more of tho like character. Very respectfully, A ClTlKKX. Agony li Courted By persons who, attacked by a mild fotm of rheumatism, neglect to seek prompt relief. Subsequent torture is prevented by an Im mediate resort to Hostet ter's Stomach Bit ters. Slight exposure, an occasional draught, will beget tins painful malady, where there Is a' predisposition to it In the blood. It is not difficult to arrest the trouble at the outset, but well nigh impossible to eradicate it when matured. No evidence in relation to this superb blood depurent is more posi tive than that which establishes its efficacy as a preventive and remedy for rheumatism. Not only Is it thorough, but safe, which the vegetable and mineral poisons, often taken as curatives of the disease, arc not. Besides expelling the rheumatic virus from the system, it overcomes feverand ague, bilious ness, constipation and dyspepsia. In re plv to inquiries. ice President Crocker of the Southern Pacific, states that this company' has not reached a decision with regard to the Portland & Willamette Valley road, the option of buying the controlling interest in which the Southern Pacific has until May'10. When asked if his road has in con templation at any time'in the fu ture the building of av line from Portland to Astoria, he said that the company is now giving prac tically all of hs attention to the construction of tho main line be tween hero and Portland, and will not, at the present at least, give any thought to the proposition for building the branch lino in ques tion. One would infer from the words and actions that the ques tion of making this extension has not yet entered tho minds of an of the directors. Mr. Crocker called attention to the statement somewhere made that some of tho rails for the line across the Siskiyous would bo sent north by steamer, then shipped to the southern terminus by the Or egon &' California. He states that this will not be done, but that all the rails will bo shipped over the California & Oregon, and be laid from this end. None. but steel rails will bo used. Within ten days it is expected that trains will be running to a point eight miles north of the present terminus, Hornbrook. The new station will be named Cole's. It is thought the Oregon lino will be reached by June 1. Replying to tho question of what effect, judged from his stand point, the connection of the two roads will have on western Oregon, he said he was unable to sec how it can prove otherwiseTthan a great benefit to that section- that from all he can learn the country is ripe for an improvement of this kind; an improvement that they have been hoping and looking for for yeais. Tho benefits to be derived fiom a wider market for products, the interchange of many staple arti cles, and rapid transit otr a through line for freight and passengers are such as will necessarily make the ciuntr' more prospeious and wealthy. In 1 is opinion there will be a considerable rise in the prico of land, consequent on completion of tho road. As the gap grows shorter overland travel increases. When the connection is made two sleepers will be put on through .trains. It was also asked whether passenger rates will be lowered when tho roads are joined, and whether an emigrant rate will be given. In answer it was stated that the general passenger agent now has that subiect under con sideration; that he is outlining a plan with a view to this end, and that soon ho will submit it to the directors of the road for their con sideration. It is not certain that an emigrant rate will be adopted, but from what can be learned the probabilities are that this will" be done. CVN. l'riiio with any Throat JVJYV v or Lung Disease.
