He was a member of the. legislature from Steele county. There is an inci dent in Steele's legislative career that goes -very far to show his characteristic regard for his wife. He has one fault, however. He takes no stock in woman suffrage except when he is obliged to. On the occasion in question the woman suffrage bill was before the house. Maj. Pickley was championing the cause of tho fair sex in eloquent words when a call was made for a vote, and the clerk proceeded to call the roll. "When Steele's name was reached ho roso with the dignity of a De mosthones and cemmenced: "Mr. Speaker, I am . sorry that I cannot support this bill, but " At that moment a well dressed lady was seen to bend over the gallery rail. Tn a loud voice she exclaimed: "W-U-b-u-r!" lie glanced upward.. It enough. He turned and said "Mr. Speaker, I vote aye." Tho lady was Steele's wift-, as Out of the seventy-five men who lynched five negroes in' York county, S. C., the other day, writes to a state paper that the party had no doubt that the five men were guilty, yet it was also certain that "under the rules of evidence they could never be legally convicted." The Illinois house has passed a bill to prohibit idiots, insane per sons and inmates of prisons from marrying. The bill has been called forth through the proxy marriage of Spies, the anarchist murderer, with Miss Van Zandt at Chicago. "None are so fond of secrets as those who do not mean to keep them; such persons covet secrets, as a. spendthrift covets money, for the purpose of circulation." Col ton. It costs a man 40 cents every time he swears at Oxford, Penn., an ordinance imposing such a fine haying, reaently been passed by the local council. Chisholm, of No. 2723 Stod dart Street, St. Louis, Mo., writes : "During my long residence in Can ada I suffered for years from pains in my back, across the region of the kidneys and by .the constant use of Allcock's Plasters invariably ob tained great relief. Upon removing to St. Louis, I was again troubled with the same complaint, and was advised to use Magnetic and other kinds of plasters, without being re lieved of pain, so fell back to my old friend Allcock, wfib, gives me more relief than any other I have ever tried. The Interstate Oommerce Act. When a conductor tried to eject a tramp from a Southern Pacific train the other day, the interloper sprung the interstate commerce act on him. He claimed that he had only boarded the train at Reno, which was a short haul, while the fellow on the other brake beam had had the long haul all the way from Ogden. As ho un derstood the law, it was expressly intonded to prevent discrimination, and ho would invoke the commis sion. The conductor gave him a short haul from the beam and a stalwart brakeman gave him a haul that he will long romomber. Sac. Bee. Tho cream takes out of tho milk about four parts of its solids, which are rated at 13 parts of 100. This leaves 87 parts water. On this basis some writers contend that a calf should never be fed skimmed milk, as there is not food enough in rit. Well, if it is sour it is worse yet. Admit it all. When are the four parts of solid in the cream worth the most? As veal or butler? They are worth four times as much a3 butter. All right. Do not starve the calf, but make up the four parts of solids with other food costing less than two cents pnr pound. This is business, sense and science combined. The Canadian Indians number 12S,7G1. Take- SIMMONS LIVER REGULATOR For all Diseases of tfie Liver, Kidneys, Stomach at J Spleen, This purely vegetable pre paration, now so celebrated as a Family Medicine, originated in the South in 1838. It acts gently on the Bowels and Kidneys and corrects the action of the Liver, and is, there fore, the best preparatory medicine, whatever the sick ness may prove to be. In all common diseases it will, un assisted by any other medi cine, effect a speedy cure. The Begulator Is safe to administer in any condition of the system, and under no circum stances can It do harm. It will Invigorate like a glass of wine, but is no intoxicating bever age to lead to intemperance; will promote di gestion, dissipate headache, and poner ally tone up the system. The dose u small, not unpleasant, and its virtues undoubted. No loss of time, no inter "ruption, or stoppage of business while taking the Regulator. Children complaining of Colic, Headache, or Sick Stomach, a teaspoonful or more will give relief. If taken occasionally by pa tients exposed to MALARIA, will expel the poison and protect them from attack. A PHYSICIAN'S OPINION. I. have been practicinz medicine for twenty vears. and liave never been able to put up a vegetable compound that would, like Simmons Liver Regu lator, promptly and effectively move the Liver to action, and at the same time aid (instead of weak ening) the digestive and assimilative powers of the system.
