V-) .grants o spring. ja Post remarks that rence between Ad miral 1? i-agut and Senator Jones, of Florida, lies in the fact that the former was lashed to the mast and the latter is mashed to the last. Seceetaey Ljoiae evidently be lieves that hard work is a good substitute for genius. He devoted four months' diligent effort to the preparation of the Calhoun oration which he recently delivered at Charleston, S. C. The small pox is in San Fran cisco; the approach of warmer, drier weather mitigates the prob ability of the scourge afflicting the coast, but all due precaution should be observod. With steam and sail craft almost daily arriving here from San Francisco vigilance is needful. If, says the S. F. JPost, the charge of arson made against ex-Manager Simmons of the Hotel del Monte be well grounded, his offense and his arrest will make one of the most singular incidents in the his tory of crime. The theory is that in order to revenge himself for his discharge ancTto conceal dishones ty in his management, he fired the hotel. The water appliances of the building were tampered with, and failed to work when the flames broke out. It was only by the greatest good fortune that a fright ful loss of life was not joined "to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of dollars1 worth of property. According to current accounts, Simmons is. the sort of man that we are accustomed to meat with as the .heavy villain of melodra matic fiction. For years he served the hotel in a subordinate capacity, and did so well and was so trusted that he was raised to the position of manager As soon as suspi cion fell upon him, however, his past was looked into, and we are told that it is discovered that he did a term in an eastern peniten tiary for embezzlement. But the strangest part of the story is the preservation of the account books of the hotel, which are said to prove his thefts. These books on the night of the fire were not placed in the safe.. The hotjel was of wood and burned liko a bunch of matches. The chances in favor of the destruction .of the books was ten million to one. Yet the wildly improbable hap pened. The books werenotburned. Timbers from above crushed down upon them, they fell on sodden ashes, and the beams resting upon them preserved them from the flames. In these days of parlor fiction, the American novelist would turn away in gentle disgust from such a story as this. It would be too lurid, too theatrical alto gether for use in his mild and po lite pages. A character like that ,of Simmons, too a man of intelli gence, apparently a gentleman, but still an ex convict, coolly re sorting to arson, and in all Ijkeli hood to wholesale murder, to get vengeance and hide the record of his filchings a milk-and-water realist of the Howells band would not think of soiling his gloved fingers by touching so improbable " a monster. If Simmons' guilt shall be proved, no punishment provided by the laws of our state is adequate. For such crimes as he stands charged with the penal ty should he death on the gajlows. An "End to Uonc Scraping. Edward Shepherd, of Ilarrisburg, 111., says: "Having received so much bene fit from Electric Bitters, 1 feel it my duty to let suffering humanity know it Have had a running sore on my leg for eight years; my doctors told me I would have to have the bone scraped tr leg amputated. I used, instead, threa bot tles of Electric Bitters and seven boxes Bucklen's Arnica Salve, and my leg is now sound and well." Electric Bitters are sold at fifty cents a bottle, and Bucklen's Arnica Salve at 25e;per bos by W. E. Dement & Co. - spring fabrics, .aant earrings are in uulated capes are a novelty jquo bodices are entirely out of .or. The fancy for ribbon trimming ib gaining ground. An autumn leaf in variegated gold is the latest scarf pin. Picot-edged ribbons are the most fashionable for garniture. Myrtle leaves are mixed with orange blossoms in bridal wreaths. The blossoms of the crab apple fnr nish the "very latest" perfume. - The darned thread laces and old Normandy laces are in great favor. New French sateens are in pompa dour designs of very bright colors. Wrap3 and jackets will not be fash ionable for street wear this spring. Artificial flowers have given place to real ones as trimming for ball dresses. Floral muffs of natural violets, rose buds and the like are carried by bridesmaids. Colored handkerchiefs are but little worn, and silk ones are entirely done away with. Skirts for-the street remain short, but all house and evening dresses must be demi-tramed. The newest blue is the "jubilee," and the. newest shade of pink is called 'Charles X." Spring brides must carry bouquets of ascension lillies, white lilacs or white chrysanthemums. Neapolitan violet is one of the most delicate of the new tint3, bnt it is be coming only to extreme blondes. m Famous Women. m Madame Trebelli, tho greatest of living contraltos who has traveled extensively, in fact visited every county and city of note in the world, has just departed from the slope of the Pacific, and often expressing the greatest admiration for the beauty and grandeur of our scenery and the delightful mildness of our climate, left tho following written note as a living expression of her opinion in the hands of a Portland druggist, the original of which can be seen on de mand. rouTLAND, Or., April 6, 1887.
