The Oregon Mist saj-s: Daniel Hss, who m.ide filial proof before Clerk Dale, a week ago Tuesday last, took up his homestead in the NVhalem valley, at ihe advanced age of 75, being now 80 years of age. If there is any county in the state that has an octogenerian homesteadpr we would like to hear from it. Think of the nerve it took for a man 75 years of ago to tackle a woods ranch in the Nehalem valley. About eighteen acres of his land have been slashed and over six acres are in. cultiva tion. Mr. Hess has done all the work himself, and on Monday l-st walked the greater part of the distance from his ranch to the county seat over thirty miles. "Do you know, my friend,' said a very solemn political individual, "that when you bilently drop that snow-white ballot from your fin gers .it floats down in rhythmic grace and settles the destinies of a nation?" 'lNo, sir, I don't," re plied the impecunious voter, "but I know when I drop it into the box it settles my bargain with the boss o this 'ere ward." The Tehuan tepee ship railway is not to be affected by the death of Captain Eads. He finished all the drawings and charts for the work months before his death. Endorsement of a Leading Physician. I havo tried a number of physicians, but without receiving any permanent- benefit. Among tho number were one or two speclallits. Tao inedlclno they applied was lfko firs to tha sore, causing Intenso pain. I saw a statement In tho papers telling what S. S. S. had dona tor others similarly afflicted. I procured soma at once. Before I had used tho second bottlo tha ncljhbors could notice that ay cancer was healing tip. 3Iy general health had bees bad for two or threo years I had a hacking cough and spit blood continually. I had a savera pain In my breast. After taking six bottles ot S, s. s. my cough left me and I grew stoutsr than I had been for several years. Hy cancer has healed over all bat a little spot about tha size or a half dime, and It 13 rapidly disappear ing. I would advise overy one vlth cancer to give S. S. S. a fair trial. Mas. NANCY J.
