How They Gather in Stores, Their Golden Ic is often a source of wonder how so many sea captains amass large fortunes, build palatial resi dences and settle down, after a life of hardship and exposure, as the seers and prophets of their native villages. To be sure, since the days of high freights and vast profit of East Indian trade, when ; frequently a vessel paid for her self in one voyage, fewer oppor tunities arc afforded to owners and captains to accumulate fortunes with the rapidity of former days. Still thefc are methods by which the crafty commander of the ship is enabled to pick up a few stray dollars. The law pro vides that the captain of every ship shall provide a "slop-chest," containing boots, oil-skins, under wear, etc., to bo sold to the sailors, including a goodly supply of to bacco. The law also provides that the profits of the captain from the sales shall be limited to 10 per cent. This, however is rarely en forced, and the captain disposes of tobacco that costs 30 cents per pound for 75 cents, $1 and often $1.50. The other contents of the slop-chest are also doled out to the sailors, with whom it is a case of Hobson's choice, at enormous profits to the captain's pockets. Captains, also, have a peculiar fondness for commissions, and frhen lying at a port the butcher, the ship chandler and the bum boatmen all willingly agree to pay over a certain percentage of the money received from the ship for the sake, of obtaining the trade. Money'has to be hired to meet the bill; and here, too, the inevitable commission jingles in tho pockets of the master of the ship at sea an autocrat, on shore an object of adulation. Vessels in distress are often obliged to hire largo sums of money to meet the expenses of repairing, and part oi the interest paid and the large bonuses of the advances find their way into the ever open pocket of the shrewd and crafty mariner. As an illustration, the writer was on board a ship, the second mate of which was to be discharged at a foreign port. The captain, in making up tho accounts ready to he submitted to the consul, found that he had been charging the mate 70 cents per pound for tobacco. "Those fellows on shore will get all his money anyhow," said he, "and T reckon I might as well have part of it." Accordingly tobacco was entered at 1 a pound, and the other items of the account were increased in like proportion. From this short account it will be seen that captains still have opportunities to make a little money "on the outside;" the amounts made by some by smug gling soon enables them to retire from -the sea and live a life of ease and oomfort. Their life is a hard one, and it must bo remembered that maty do not employ any of the methods described above; but still the writer feels justified in saying Trom experience that tho majority of sea captains are "on the make." Boston Advertiser. Hot water is the best thing that can be used to heal a sprain or bruise. The wounded part should bo Diaced in water as Hot as can be borne for fifteen or twenty min utes, and in all ordinary cases the pain will gradually disappear. Hot water applied by means of cloths is a sovereign remedy for neural gia or pleurisy pains. For burns or scalds apply cloths well satur ated with cool alum water, keep ing the injured parts covered from the air. WEAK LUNGS MADE STRONG. Persons who -stay in-doors all the time and lean over a counter or a desk, sooner or later discover that their lungs are giving out. Editors are of ten thus afflicted. Erastus"R." Sutherland, editor of Tlu Eastern: State Journal, "White Plains, New York, writeB: "I have used Aixcocirs Porous Plasters, in my family since 1868. In that year'I had an attack of pneu monia from which I was not ex pected to recover. My lungs were left in a very weak state. I commenced using Allcock's Porous Piasters, wearing them constantly three months, two on the Ibreast and two on the back. The result was sur prising, at least to me. The pains in my lungs had left me, and I felt like " a giant refreshed with neWwine." Tacoma Asks Encouragement. Seattle, March 22. Tacoma has at last succumbed to the feel ing of discouragement and jeal ous'. For four years the Northern Pacific Railroad company has promised to erect extensive ter minal warehouses, offices, elevators and wharves; but no -movement has yet been made. Many people who invested means there on the strength of Tacoma being the western terminus or the road are now becoming disgusted. The feelinir is intensiGed by talk of Northern Pacific extensions to Se attle, Portland and Astoria. Gen. J. "W. Sprague, president of the Tacoma National bank; J. M. Buckley, general manager of the Northern Paoific railroad; "W. J. Thompson, president of the Mer chant's Natioal bank; A. C. Mason, a real estate dealer; C. N. Mas terson, president of the Pacific National bank; I. W- Anderson, president of the Tacoma Land company; "W. D. Tyler, manager of tho Tacoma hotel, and S. M. Nolan and G. H. "Vheeler, mer chants, comprising he executive committee of tho Tacoma chamber of commerce, have memorialized the company, setting forth the de pendence of the city on the com pany's favor toward it as a termin ous, asking a declaration of intentions toward the city The Cascade branch into eastern Wash ington grain fields will be com pleted in six months; yet the company have not made a move toward handling the large prom ised business at its terminus, Ta- Tar and Peatliers at Hoquiam. Hoquiam was the scene of quite a lively time last week. It would seem that one Rhoades and wife have bjen making themselves objectionable-to the citizens of that place for some time, and some of them having arrived at the con clusion that patience had ceased to be a virtue, heated a kettle of tar and gave Mr. Rhoades a liberal coat, accompanied by an invitation to seek another clime, which, if no warmer, would at least be more congenial, which invitation was accepted. But in the choice of locations Rhoades has made a mistake in coming to Montesano, as hisconspicuous absence will be more welcome than his presence, and while the citizens of this city are law abiding and long suffering, yet they have endured the presence ot such people as Rhoades and wife about as long as they care to, and if they persist in remaining it is ditbcult to predict what may hap pen. This is the same Rhoades whom the people of Aberdeen compelled to marry the woman who now is His wife, on pain of criminal prosecution.-- Ghehalis Vhlette.
