C , arrived in Antelope, where they were met by a large number of the prominent stockmen from this vicinity, who had been invited to meet them and discuss stock interests, says the Ante lope Herald. The meeting was held in the Occidental parlors, and many goes tions of interest to stockmen were dis cussed at length. Mr. rinchot, who is at the bead of the Forestry Department, had been requested by the liead' of the Interior Department to investigate the matter of sheep-grazing upon forest re serves, and to ascertain as nearly as possib'e just what the effect was, With this object in view, hequestioned a num ber of stockmen of long residence here, and who had been tending sheep to the mountains for from 10 to 15 years, and (heir replies and the information he ob tained was most satisfactory. Mr. Pin chot 's report to the Interior Department upon this important question will no doubt do much towards disabusing their minds of many erroneous ideas in regard to the pasturage of sheep on the re serves. Mr. Newell, ho is Chief Hydrogra pher ot the Geological Department, is making a trip through this section of country, in the interest of Government Irrigation, and looking tip sites for reser voirs, hrotn this place, the party goes to Prineville by way of Agency Plains, where Mr. Newell will investigate the feasibility of getting water from the Des hules onto that large body of arid land. In speaking of his trip into this section of the state, Mr. Newell expiessed him self as moMt agreeably surprised, and. said that be expected to find a large lava covered aea, whereas he found a splendid agricultural district. Altogetherthe meeting was most pleas ant and instructive for all, and much good is confidently expected as a result of the conference. The long-prevalent idea that the Interior Department was opp-srd to the pasturage of sheep upon forest reserves was corrected by Mr. nohct, who assured the stockmen that their interests were considered para mount to those ot the partirs who are clamoring for the closing of the reserves, and that the Department merely desited thorough investigation of the mattt r. Send all order n- Gazette, Heppner. the labor of one man was required for 100 minutes to do the carne woik. It is one of the marvels of the age that the amount of human labor now required to produce a bushel of wheat from begin ning to end is, on an average, only'teri minutes, whereas in 1830 the time was 3 hours and 3 minutes. During the in terval between these years the cost of the human labor required to produce this bushel of wheat declined from 17 cents to Zi cents. In the contrast thus presented the heavy clumsy plow of the day was nsed in 1830; the seed waa sown by hand and waa harrowed into the ground by the drawing ot bushes over it; the grain was cut with sickles, hauled to a barn and at some time be fore the following spring was tbreebed with flails ; the winnowing was done with a sheet attached to rods on which the grain was placed with a shovel and then tossed up and down by two men until the wind had blown out the chaff. In the latter year, on 'the contrary, the ground waa plowed and pulverized in the same operation by a disc plow ; the seed wai sown with a mechanical seed er drawn by horses.; the reaping, thresh ing and sacking of the wheat was done with the combined reaper and tbreeher drawn by horses and then the wheat was ready to haul to the granary. Ex The Way th Fight Began. Pala-Faced Husbands Wanted. There are hundreds of marriageable heiresses in the Indian Territory, and many are beautiful. Probably 3000 yonng Indian women will soon come in to possession of lands worth $S,000 to each one. The full-bloods are slovenly and ugly. Most of the women prefer white men. In order to marry one of these Indian heiresses a man must be come a member of the Choctaw or Chick asaw tribes, obligating himself to obey all the laws and customs of the tribe. The fortune hunter who would marry a Chickasaw heiress must pay a wedding fee of flO to the tribe, but it costs only $1.50 to become a Choctaw. When a white adventurer becomes a p.qnawman he becomes one f ths tribe, at;d is en titled to his part of the land to be allot ted to the individual members of the tribe. This dues not interfere with tie share wh'cli goes to his wife, so that when the allottment is worth $8,000 to each individual, there would be lt,00 in the family. Here is a great oppor tunity for local admirers of dusky, dark eved maidens. At Butte City, Mont., recently a Ger man, talking to the bartender upon the subject of labor unions, said: "I tell you, uf a man wants brotection in dig country he must jine a anion An Irishman standing near, hearing the remark replied : "Phat's thot about a China anion? We'll have no China anions in this counthry, I'm telling you." "Who said anything aboot a China union? I say a man wbat wants bro tection in this country mast jine a union," replied the German. ''There you go again with your Chins anion, we ll have no China onions here, I'm tellin' ye," said the Irishman. "I didn't say China union," replied the irate German; "I said jine a anion. "Well," said the Irishman, "pby don't ve talk United States, ye auld beer tank." "Why don't you understand United .States, you Irish whiskey bam ?" replied the German. "Don't yez call me a whiskey bam, or I'll smash yer face," said the Irishman "Und uf you do I smash you baok." replied the German ; and that's the way the fight began. i .Changed Location. M. B.
