Y., we have re ceived ‘ ‘The People’s Common Sense Medi cal Adviser, in plain English; or, Medicine Simplified,” by 1!. V. Pierce, M. D. Coun selor-inchief oi the Board of Physicians and Surgeons at the World’s Dispensary. Who ever helps humanity in its struggle with its inherent weaknesses and diseases, to bear or cure, is its benefactor. Ignorance is not on. ly of itself a cause of disease and mortality, but it is the enemy of every effort to cure or mitigate. N 'thing will so speedily remove this cause as knowledge (an elementalykone at least) of the diseasss to which we are heir, as well as those superinduced by our own imprudence. Dr. Pierce has rendered, in our judgment, a benefactor’s service, both to the afflicted and to the profession, in his diag nosis of the diseases treated of, and in the presentation of the philosophic principles in volved iu their cause and removal. He is sparning ol remedies, and usually prescribes such as are safe in unskilled hands. As a book merely of abstract knowledge, it is ex- ceeuingP’ readable and interesting, especial ly toe following ¡.ubjects:—Cerebral Physiol ogy, Human Tempei aments, Pseudo-Hy giene, the Nursing of the Sick, Sleep, Food, Ventilation, etc* In one chapter on another subject, so delicate iu its nature that it is shut up hey „rid the domain of warning to all but physicians, so accursed in its results in modern seciety, he is most explicit, and alike true to God, to virtue, to life, and to society, shows the tiutli as presented in the teachings of scripture,—that life begins with conception,—with great force, to which is added faithful warnings.—From the Phila delphia Presbyterian. In New York, last week, Louisa Heuser, a pretty girl of fourteen, attempted to commit suicide by drinkiag a quarter of a pint of red ink. This sounds ink red-ible, but it is true. The question is again agitated, “ ShalLwo- men be permitted to pass the hat. in our churches’?” A few years ago, when hoops were in vogue, tee ladies couldn’ t ‘ ‘pass a hat” in the ai-le without dragging it up to the pew tlieo enteaed.
