This ery meets us in every walk o f life and we often hear it from people who use it with a certain unction as it fcere, as though they rather lilted it. This is es pecially so with that class of chronic delin quents who are always behind with their lit tle bills and with whom times have been dull ever since their infancy, We opine that the somewhat too sefiied conviction that times are dull in a great measure retards the growth of betfir limes. There is a too great lack of confidence, and capital is ovei-sh y of investment and remaius idle, except in the harids of a few reckless speculators— to draw it mildly for we came near u.-iug a different term— who by their extravagant operations and frequent col.apses unset le values aLd demoralize the business of the ojunt.y. t a l e C a s s in r X i . i s . T he Oregonian says, the f.-H oning i- the latest news from Cassiar, collated from Y .c - toria papers; T he news from the m ines is up to the Gtli o f October. T he weather was tl en clear and pleasant with co ld nights. A great m any o f ihe m iners were leaving daily, wh had wor ked ou t their cla im s, or w ho had been w ork in g fo r wages; others intended to leave in on e or two weeks, and som e were trying to h old on as lo n g as the weather wotild allow thm to work. It was, generally thought that they w ould be able to work u n til the latter end o f the m onth. On M cD am e’s creek a g co d many were stoppin g until the very last. This creek has been so high d u rin g the sum m er and so lia ble to sudden freshets, that it is believed that the best time to work the bed o f elie stream will be early in the spring and late in the au tum n. U pon the benches those w h o were getting pay intenbed to remain u ntil about the 20th, and several expected to stay until the ice drove Riem away. On T h ib ert’s creek few men were rem ain ing, and on ly one com pan y intend to w inter there- G enerally the creek claim s upon the low er portion are nearly worked ou t, and it was too late i:i the season to open bank claim s. ¡Six m iles up the creek a com pany were sinking in deep grou nd at the m outh o f B oulder creek, and gettin g very fair pros pects. T he entire creek for a lon g distance has been staked o fffo r operations next spring. On B u ild e r crock itself som e good d iggings have been found with very coarse g old . A g rert portion o f Pease creek is con sider ed to be worked out in the bed of.tjbestream. Near the town, at the low er end, how ever, there are a great inanv claim s, o n ly h a lf o f w h ich have been w oik ed and which have paid well this.year. A b o u t three m iles a-, b ov e this is another stretch o f about a m ile in length, where the claim s are rich , and have on ly been worked on one side o f the stream . A bout two m iles fur her are som e rich bank claim s, whili will requ ire one or two seasons m ore be ore they are worked ou t.. On T rou t creek three claim s were paying well, anil two or tnree on Quartz creek . A ll o f these parties intend to work as tong as the weather will perm it. T he new discoveries o n Say ye a creek have created som e excitem ent, and a great, many will go dow'n there upon the ice in the spring. B u t little is known o f this stream except that fou r m en took ou t about 88 ounces o f gold in about a m on th . T he g old is very coarse, and indicates a heavy deposit som ew here. H en ry LI man. with three other m en, was there when the party left, and his report will be looked for with a good deal o f inter est. It is estim ated that the num ber o f m iners d u rin g the prsent season has been about 800. T he y ield o f g o ld from the different stream s may be safely put dow n at$60Q.0G0, and probably will exceed that sum con sid er ably O f this, Dease creek has probably tur ned ou t $250,000; T hibert creek, $¡50,000 to $175,000; and M cD am e cr eli, $200.000, in cluding its tributaries—T -o u t, Quartz and Suew creeks.
