L o n d o n , Oct. 16.—The P an d o ra arrived safe and sound a t P o rtsm o u th th is after n oon , after an ad ven tu rou s arid eventful voyage in th e A rc tic seas. The P an d ora arrived safely a t Disco an d 1 eft th a t p ort on th e 7th of A ugust, reachin g U p ern avik in tim e to leave on th e 13th. A fter sailin g fsom P o rt U p ern avik the P an d ora crossed th e dreaded M elvin bay w ith ou t m ishap. The usual fields of p ack ice were n o t v isi ble, and a n .a lm o st cle a r sh eet of wrater was found. The passage was m ad e in good tim e. In due tim e the expedition reached C arey ilslaD d, where C om m ander Y ou n g anticipated finding d isp atch es th a t m ig h t h av e been left by Capf. N ares to be taken to the B ritish A d m ira lty . In this he was disapppinted, as no signs of the govern m e n t exp lorin g expedition were visible. N oth in g fu rth er to ne done a t th e Islan d , C aplain Y o u n g decided to steer for L a n ca ste r Sound, and on reach in g th a t point encountered for th e first tim e ice floes. So g reat was the pressure of floating icc t h a t it was w ith g reat difficulty th a t the P an d ora was forced on. Despite th e ice and difficulty of the passage, Captain Y o u n g succeeded in traversing th e entire length of Barrow S tra it, m ak in g the p as sage in good tim e. The P a n d o ra ’s prog ress ,was then im peded by a d en se'an d blinding fog, w hich was so th ick and im pen etrab le that m en a few feet from each o th er were invisible. A s soon as the steam er arrived a t an ch o r off B echy Island several.of the officers and crew w ent ashore and m ade an exam in ation of th e buildings. T h ey found the storehouse, built for the benefit of sailors or castaw ay s of icebound vessels, broken into. On en terin g the building th ey found cloth in g and provis ions left there to be in a state of confusion. E v ery th in g m ovable was scattered about in th e m o st singular w ay. A t first it seem ed to have been th e a c t of h u m an beings, but th ey were satisfied the destruction of th e stores--#ad been accom plished by P o la r bears, as track s were visible in every direction. One discovery m ade was th a t the headboards over the graves of Sir Jo h n F ran k liu ’s m en , who were lyin g buried th ere, A re still stan d in g u p righ t and in good preservation. On the 26th of A ugust th e Pan d ora steam ed from B ech y Island for Peel S tra it, and th en com m en ced the m ost critical period of the voyage, for th e steam er en countered v ast fields of pack ice, m ak in g th e passage m o st difficul t and laborious, struggling throu gh pack ice. She readily worked h er w ay, and despite difficulty soon passed the fu rth est p oin t reached by the F o x , when M cC lintock was in search of Sir Jo h n F ra n k iin . Soon after reaching there the P an d ora neared th e island know n as K in g W illia m ’s L a n d , th u s n av ig atin g a sea where no ship ever w ent before, e xcep t perhaps th a t of Sir Jo h n F ra n k lin . A t this tim e the m ost intense e x cite m e n t prevailed am on g the officers and m en , as it was exp ected som e im p o rtan t results were a t h and. M any believed th e y would be sure to discover tra ce s of F ra n k lin ’s exp ed itio n , and som e were sanguine th a t even Sir. Jo h n ’s papers would be found, and even tu ally m ak in g B eh rin g ’s S traits. In this, lioyvever, they were disappointed. R o q u ette’s Islan d was discovered ahead. It was then discov ered probable th a t th e vessel would be able to reach B e llo t’s S tra its. A s the steam er m oved forward all h an d s gazed eagerly ah ead to th e sou th w ard , but on reachin g R o q u ette’s Isla n d , the officers and m en saw the edge of a solid pack of ice, w hich stretch ed across from side to side in one unbroken exp an se of hum m ock ice. This p ack blocked th e entrance to B e llo t’s straits. I t vvas the sam e p ack of ice th a t stopped C aptain M cClintock on th e F o x , so there was no hope of a speedy m o vem en t of the icy barrier. The P an d o ra stayed a t this p oin t till th e 7th of Sep tem b er, w hen, finding no fu rth er progress possible, Capt. Y ou n g and officers saw they m u st eith er decide to rem ain through the w inter in th e ice or retu rn . A fter m atu re deliberation it was decided to be useless toTem ain in w inter q u arters; th a t it would be far b etter to retu rn n e x t y ear. The re turn jou rn ey was full of difficulties. Ice was rap idly form ing and th e passage of th e P an d ora was a co n sta n t series of e x citin g scenes and narrow escapes from m oving ice1 floes. F in ally escaping t li rough Peel stra it, the ice still rap idly form ing and accu m u latin g , th e steam er a t length reached Carey Islan d in safety. There Capiain Y o u n g found th e long looked for dispatches from C aptain N ares for th e ad m iralty . F ro m M elville bay the P an d ora steam ed direct for E n glan d and arrived safely. C aptain Y ou n g reports th a t from th e p revalen ce of n orth winds th ere is ab u n dan t prom ise t h a t C aptain N ares will prove successful. Should the exp ectatio n s of the P a n d o ra’s co m m an d er be verified,' C aptain N ares will proceed to th e h ighest latitu d e possible. P ersons or I mportance .—Talk about persons of importance, will jrou? There is no one equal to the family baby. Never a king, or emperor, or president with his power. He knows it, too, be fore his tiny feet can patter over the floor. He is as sure of it as if he knew every language spoken instead of none, When he awakes in the morning, another sun rises; when he is carried away for the night, he must kiss everyone, and everyone rejoices in his kisses. His eating and drinking, his walking, ana his pantomiue are subjects for important bulletins every day, Ah, how strange it is that this important being must one day be let down to the position of an ordinaiyboy, expected to eat what is^set before him, and do as he is told—perhaps to go into somebody’s office and be snubbed; that lie should come alter a while to be a man, and find no one very anxious as to his kisses—nay, to have me refused him occasionally! Yet, it’s true. If ho live, he will slide slowly down to the. ordinary lev el! He II be “our baby’’ no more, but ouiy a com mon human being, with faults in plenty; and even it he should stand at the top of the social ladder, be a great soldier, a renowned statesman, a genius — no matter what, he’ll never be what he is'now, a faultless creatuse, whose will is law to every body, who has not an enemy in tlie world and lots of lovers, and who has only to utter a series of shn I shrieks to be called a darling, smothered with caresses, and i omforted with flagons. Too h e a v y — A little fellow the other day, be ing told by a young man to get off his knee, as he was too heavey, made quite a sensation among the persons-present by yelling back; ‘ Too heavy, hey! Sister Lou weigh’s a ton more’n I do, and ypu held her on your knee four hours last night.’ ------------ ------------------- ¿fiss L- nttie W olf is said to be the richest wo man in America.
