Four or five room houses to rent with modern improvements seem to be scarce in Salem. A man who has gone into thi V. M. C. A. army work thought to ioav his family in Kulem. Hut after spending a collide of iluvs lookin? for a modern house of tho size he wanted, tho same could not be found. Ho was williuir to Jiny from 20 t0 25 a month, o, 1 Announcement is made that the Apol lo club will begin its fall rehearsals within a week or so under the direction of John W. Todd. The concerts to be given this winter by the club will be subscription only and only those who have so subscribed will receive ticket At tho eourerts to be given in tho opera house, no tickets will be sold. The physical connection between the Oregon Klertrie and Southern Pacific on rront street and Court will be com pleted this week. While there was only about eight feet between the two ronds, it seemed impossible to secure any order that would bring the two roads together nnd it became necessary for government supervision to come in hofore tho order was given to connect. And while at oth er points tho roads had been ordered to connect, by some influence, that at Salem was delayed for several months. This is a rather paradoxical an Mo ment, but it is true. Musty wheat and that which hus been rained on has been sold lu Salem tho past week at a price! higlier than tho best wheat raisod in the valley. This i tlio way it hnppenoiT. . The government has placed a prieo oni wheat, bringing the market in 8nlein t) about $2 and $2.03. Hut there is big demand for wheat to I used for chick ' on food or even to mix for hogs. It' is unlawful to so use or sell mulVtg wheat for these purposes. Hut tho govern ment has placed no restrictions on musty wheat or that which the mills cannot hm. Hence there is a demand for wheat; to be used for other purposes besides milling and the only wheat that can Ijo so used is that wliic), the millers will not accept. Hence musty wheat will bring nt limes us mucli or moio than milling wheat. We have installed a largt wagon and auto Howe Scales at our mill on Church and Trade streets.
