Born in 1834, her long and useful life fell among stirring scenes, that broadened and developed an unusual ly bright mind, and eventually placed her prominently be fore the .nation. Crossing the plains by ox team in 1852 in the first flush of womanhood, she shared the dangers of the trip in those early days and felt, out on the boundless prairies and under the cloudless skies, her first great sorrow; for there her mother stricken to death by cholera found her last resting place beside the Oregon trail.
