The American consul general at Bar celona, Spain, in a recent report says that espevinl attention should be given to the new lumber market in Spain that is hound to be created immediately upon the opening of the Panama cannl to commercial traffic. The opportun ity will bo further increased upon the establishment of a regular freight serv ice from the Pacific coast of the Unit ed States to Spanish and Portuguese ports by way of the isthmus. 1 no import lumber trade as it now stands in Spain is in a flourishing con dition. Oregon and California woods. particularly Oregon pine, are well liked for their quality and especially for their large sizes. Several consignments have come to Spain, in renlity trans shipments from France, England nnd Germany, which puts the local quota tions for this lumber nt a high ficure and renders it practically impossible to compete always with the pitch pine (long lent yellow lune) from the At lantic and Gulf of .Mexico ports. There s at present a market for almost any grade of anthracite that will burn, and no more coal goes to the culm bank ex cept for temporary storage and subse quent recovery by washers. Tnese ranges of artificial hills, unsightly monuments to former waste, are con tributing their share to the total coal production and are rapidly disappear ing. Even the waste from the culm bank washers is being utilized, for it is flushed into the mines and partly fills old workings where it cements to gether and furnishes support to the roof when the conl previously left for pillars is removed.
