The American consul general at Bar
celona, Spain, in a recent report says
that espevinl attention should be given
to the new lumber market in Spain
that is hound to be created immediately
upon the opening of the Panama cannl
to commercial traffic. The opportun
ity will bo further increased upon the
establishment of a regular freight serv
ice from the Pacific coast of the Unit
ed States to Spanish and Portuguese
ports by way of the isthmus.

bo delivered direct, as is hoped will be
possible by tho opening of tho inter

duced freights, there will be a certain
increasing market for tho woods of the
Pacific const.

MOUNTAINS OP CULM
ARE DISAPPEARING
The mountains of culm or coal waste
which break the sky line throughout the
anthracite coal regiou of Pennsylvania
ml which were for many years con
sidered a nuisance are now being mads
to serve a very useful purpose. There
s at present a market for almost any
grade of anthracite that will burn, and
no more coal goes to the culm bank ex
cept for temporary storage and subse
quent recovery by washers. Tnese
ranges of artificial hills, unsightly
monuments to former waste, are con
tributing their share to the total coal
production and are rapidly disappear
ing. Even the waste from the culm
bank washers is being utilized, for it
is flushed into the mines and partly
fills old workings where it cements to
gether and furnishes support to the
roof when the conl previously left for
pillars is removed.

A DREADFUL AFFAIR.

ficial circles here wero much wrought
up today over Monday's dispute on the
American steam yacht Pauline between
Secretary of tho United States Legation
Franklin Mntt Gunther, and the harbor
minister, who had given offense by ask
ing thnt thn yacht chango its anchorngs
in Christinnia fjord to muke room for
the Kaisers yacht Meteor. According
to the harbor master's account, Gun
ther fiiia(ly knocked the former's uni
form cap off.
CONGRESSMAN RESIGNS.
Washington, July 21. Representative
MrDermott, of Illinois, under charges
of lobbying, sent a message to Governor
Dunne today resigning , his seat in
congress.
In a statement from the floor of the
house, McDermott denied all charges
of misconduct in connection with the
lobby investigation.
