for ber to try to do. Now, she lived in a great big bouse all nlone, mid she
was very lonely. Some one suggested thnt she should get an uuimnl of some
sort for a companion. The old ludy thought a cut would be nice.
"So one day she heard of some one who had a beautiful big yellow cut.
This woman wanted to go on a long trip, and It would be Impossible to tike
the cat with her. So the old lady ut once sent for the woman and said she
longed for a cut mid would want it for always.
"So the cat became hers, and she named blm Worry.
"Warry was very happy in his new homo, nnd lie thought his mistress
was delightful. He would sit for hours purring In her lap and perfectly
happy, nnd his mistress would be so pleased that Wnrry was so sntlslled.
"One night, oftcr Wnrry hnd bod bin lnot drink of milk ami was curling up
in his basket, be sniclled some strange smell.
"Suddenly be saw smoke. - Up he sprung from his basket. He knew that
the only place for smoke wug in n chimney, and the very first thing be did
wag to rush for his mistress. t
"He went over to the' bed ond pulled nt the bedclothes. Tho old ludy wns
sleeping very heavily, nnd he could not seem to awaken ber. Ho tugged
more violently than ever as the smoke begun to come In the room. Then he
gave the piercing cry of a cut In pain and one tremendous pull at tho bed
clothes. The old lady woke up.
"She realized at once what was the matter. Quickly she got out of bed.
She almost forgot nbout her rheumatism, so frightened was she and bo much
depended on her hurrying, no matter how bard It wns.' She picked up Wnrry
and put him under ber nrm, nnd together they went downstairs. The fire hnd
broken out upstairs lu the old lndy's little gifting room. None of the smoke
had as yet reached downsta rs. .They had not been there for a moment be
fore the fire department came. Borne one had heard the wild call of the cat
and seen the smoke. Soon the flro was put out."
