At tho regular mating of tho Salem , school board last right Miss Maude' Davis, who has been a teacher in tho high school for several years, was ap pointed to take charge of tho depart ment of English in tho high school. Miss Davis takes the place of Miss Gregory, who resigned recently. The school board is being swamped with applications for tho offices of superintendent of schools and principal of the high school. About forty appli cants liavo made known their desires for tho appointment to tlio superintend ency. and over thirty applications havo been received for principal. The board went over and considered the many np plu.n'ions Inst night but did not pass upon nny of them. Dalrymple Clots Hearing. Iho board last night hoard V. It. lialrymplo, tho contractor who erected tho high school grandstand, and whose claim was held up at an adjourned meeting last week on the grounds the work has not been completed. The members of the board contended that Mr. Dalrymple should not bo paid for. his work for tho reason he failed to fulfill his contract by placing smaller posts under tho grandstand that was specified. Diilrymplo infoimod the di rectors that ho will remedy the defect and tho board, iissund the contractor that as soon as he did tho contract price would bo paid immediately. Tho mutter was fiiiully settled utter much discussion. Heating Plants Up. The directors practically decided hist night that if A. L. Eraser, the con tractor, who installed several heating plants in tho Salom schools, will sub mit his personal agreement in writing to repair any defects in the plans which might occur when the weather is suah as to j4ive them a thorough te'st, ho will bo paid the remaining $300 on the contract. The board has been holding up Mr. Eraser's money on the grounds tho fur naces havo not as yet been tested out in colli weather. Tlio contractor ivns not precer.t at tho meeting bst night and tlio chairman of tho board was asked to consult with him. If Mr. Fraser is willing to enter into such an agreement and the proposition passes the inspection of the district's attorney it is more than likely that the heating plant problem will bo definite ly settled according to the members of tho board.
