Miss Maud Davis Will Head English

Contractor Who Bnllt Grandstand Will
Put New Posts Under
Structure.
At tho regular mating of tho Salem ,
school board last right Miss Maude'
Davis, who has been a teacher in tho
high school for several years, was ap
pointed to take charge of tho depart
ment of English in tho high school.
Miss Davis takes the place of Miss
Gregory, who resigned recently.
The school board is being swamped
with applications for tho offices of
superintendent of schools and principal
of the high school. About forty appli
cants liavo made known their desires
for tho appointment to tlio superintend
ency. and over thirty applications havo
been received for principal. The board
went over and considered the many np
plu.n'ions Inst night but did not pass
upon nny of them.
Dalrymple Clots Hearing.
Iho board last night hoard V. It.
lialrymplo, tho contractor who erected
tho high school grandstand, and whose
claim was held up at an adjourned
meeting last week on the grounds the
work has not been completed. The
members of the board contended that
Mr. Dalrymple should not bo paid for.
his work for tho reason he failed to
fulfill his contract by placing smaller
posts under tho grandstand that was
specified. Diilrymplo infoimod the di
rectors that ho will remedy the defect
and tho board, iissund the contractor
that as soon as he did tho contract
price would bo paid immediately. Tho
mutter was fiiiully settled utter much
discussion.
Heating Plants Up.
The directors practically decided hist
night that if A. L. Eraser, the con
tractor, who installed several heating
plants in tho Salom schools, will sub
mit his personal agreement in writing
to repair any defects in the plans
which might occur when the weather
is suah as to j4ive them a thorough
te'st, ho will bo paid the remaining $300
on the contract.
The board has been holding up Mr.
Eraser's money on the grounds tho fur
naces havo not as yet been tested out
in colli weather. Tlio contractor ivns
not precer.t at tho meeting bst night
and tlio chairman of tho board was
asked to consult with him. If Mr.
Fraser is willing to enter into such
an agreement and the proposition
passes the inspection of the district's
attorney it is more than likely that the
heating plant problem will bo definite
ly settled according to the members of
tho board.
After passing upon several bills and
claims tho board adjourned.
