Ryan, the well-known local re former and Socialistic loader, and bis wife have returned after a trip through the Kast, covering a period of six months. Mr. Rvan declare that land in the East of the same grade as Oregon land sells for at least .TO per cent higher. Mr. Ryan says he was affordod the pleasure of correcting Humorous false impressions about Oregon. Many peo ple, says Mr. Kyan, throughout tho Eastern states are inquiring about con ditions ami opportunities on the Ore gon coast, anil he says thut he did his best to give them favorable enlighten men. California, according to Mr. Ky an, has suffered badly in the fruit sec tions. He describes the place as "the worst cooked place in the world.'' Against Trading Stamps. At a noon meeting of the Salem Ibisiucss Men's League at the Marion Motel today, war was declared to the death on a certain trading stamp con cern, which now has representatives in Salem attempting to work up a trailing stamp business among local merchants. A public meeting of the league is to be held at the headquarters of the Salem Hoard of Trade tomorrow night at 7:110 o'clock, when the trailing stamp ques tion will be further discussed. L6ng ago the Salem business men, al most unanimously, declared against the use of trading stamps, which they pro nounces a bogus method of procuring trado. The present trailing stamp rep resentatives have only recently arrived here, and, as soon as their presence was made known to members ot tho league, a meeting of that organization was called, witli a view of putting nil end to the business in this city with out much delay. Other questions will be discussed nt the meeting tomorrow night. One of the subjects will be that of fake adver tising. The league is adopting a new rating book, which will also come in for a large part of the forensic efforts of the members at the meeting. COMMENDS CAPITAL JOURNAL'S CRITICISM The Musical Observer of February minuends criticism in Capitul Journal as follows: "The following extract from the 'Salem Journal' is a fairly comprehen sive summing up of the various news paper reviews and typifies the general consensus of opiniou regarding Mr. Bis pliam in the northwest. . On account of this the big saw mill at Falls City of the Falls City Lumber compnny will resume work to day. This will mean employment to a great ninny men, and will be a great benefit to Salem. The mill is to bo equipped with the latest and the most modern machinery. Tho Falls City Lumber Company has built up a great business in Salem, nnd now, with the united forces they will more than ever have to be reckoned with. Four Banks May Quit, There are four banks in the state which may automatically cense to exist by virtue of the new hanking legisla tion, according to State Bank Examin er Wright. Hy the opinion of the attorney-general the law is interpreted to menu that banks which do not pay in their enpitnl in one year shall go out of business. Moot Court Tonight, (ienrge i. Bingham, one of Salem's best known attorneys, will preside over the deliberations of the moot court of Willamette University this evening. Judge lliimlinm is, perhaps, the most popular instructor nt the law college, and has devised a case in replevin which, though difficult, is both interest ing and instructive. These trials which are held in the circuit court room of the court house always attract a large crowd of spectators, and every one is invited to be present this evening at 7:3H. when lending attorneys, Krskine nnd Hickox lock horns in legal combat.
