Much Interest is being taken In the local school fairs to be held in Marlon county Just before the state fair next September, The following towns have appointed committees to secure prleo lists for the local school fair; .Wood biirn, Aurora, Gervais, Jefferson, Tur ner, Ralom, also Mt. Angel, Sllverton and Stayton will no doubt hold fairs. Teachers from every part of the county aro making Inquiry regarding the school credit for homo work plan. This plan Is in successful operation In a number of schools In the county at the present time. Teachers' reading circles have been organized In all tho largo centers of the county. These circles are presid ed over by tho principal of the school where' the circle meets, nnd the time is spent in discussing various school problems. Each circle adopts one of tho books recommended for study by the superintendent of public Instruc tion. Prnctlcaly every teacher and principal in the county attends these reading circles. Over tho vigorous protest of Sena tors Ncunor and Dlmlck, who are Joar f ul lest In the next two years the num ber of counties in the stato shall bo doubled or trebled, the senate today adopted tho majority reiort of the committee on counties recommending the passage with amendments of the Parson's bill amended a vetoed bill and making provision for formation of new counties. As originally drafted the bill provid ed that steps might bo taken for the formation of new counties from 600 square miles of territory, containing 2500 peoplo and an assessed valuation of $3,000,000, provided no border line of the proposed county should be with in 10 miles of the county seat of any other county. As amended, any proved new coun ty must have 4000 residents and an assessed valuation of $5,000,000. Final consideration of the bill was mado a BKcial order for tomorrow at 2 o'clock. A lengthy debate took place ovor an adverse report on tho. house bill pre pared by the committee on labor In dustrios for an act to protect the health of persona manufacturing, packing or handling Portland cement by making it compulsory to pack the cement in paper-lined casks. The bill was Anally dofeatted, but luter it was decided to reconsider It tomorrow. The senate decided that It is not criminal for a man to overdraw his bank account and henco defeated the Forbes bill. Senator Day even wanted to take an expression of tho sonata to ascertain how many criminals there might be lu tho upper house Bhould the bill pass. Tho Forbes bill made It a crime to draw a check or a draft on a hank when not having on deposit at the bank funds to meet the check or draft drawn. An Odd Legacy.
