IT looks as If Uncle Sam would even tually have to step Into Mexico and, after, In a nice way, explain ing to the Mexicans the real signifi cance of the Stars and Stripes It will then bo up to Uncle Sam to take Mex ico under his fatherly and more expe rienced governmental guidance. Mexico should rightly belong to the United States It Ib part of our conti nental body, through which the arter ies of tra'lo circulate. Mexico hns vnst undeveloped resources there Is much American capital already Invested there this should be protected and conditions made possllilo whereby Mexico could bo thrown open to sys tematic American development. There are far more reasons why the United States should welcome Mexico into the statehood family thnn there were for tho mixing Into the Philip pines, Porto Rico or Cuba. The fact of the building of the Pan ama cnnal with American capital Is sufficient reason alone. The Panama canal is the result of American brains, capital, energy and perseverance It Is the birthright of succeeding American generations and it Is up to the present generation to protect that birthright. American sentiment seemB to be In favor of the acquiring of Mexico and the Indications nro that President elect Wilson will prove to be the man of the hour. No matter how political vlows may differ concerning Roosevelt, It is safe to Bay that were he president during tho culmination of the Mexican trouble tho United States would have stepped In long ago, for two reasons, If no others first that Teddy would have seen his opportunity and second Ted dy likea the fighting game, President Taft, perhaps, saw tho op portunity perhnps he did not but anyway, Its too late for him now. Will Wilson act? The chances are he will, and quickly, too. The preBS dispatches slate that the Turks and Allies are resting. The Al lies will probably be called Into ac tion before the Turks unless some spe cial occasion arises because Thanks giving and Christmas are a long way off. Mayor Stecves and gentlemen of tho council the columns of The Capital Journal are open city attorney sal ary, etc., etc. you know. If when how soon Isn't there any answer or does this continued sllonce mean a veiled admission that you were wrong? It hns been decided that there will be no donkeys In tho Inaugural pa rade at VaBhlngtou on March 4th. Wise decision. In view of the har mony, unity, organization and sweep ing victory which characterized the recent Democratlo landslide there is no need of continuing the donkey as tho Democratic party emblom.' It should bo loaned to Roosevelt until again needed. Great Gathering Will He Held In San Francisco Playgrounds, Re creation and Earth Culture. Portland, Ore., Feb. 21.
