THE MEXICAN SITUATION.
IT looks as If Uncle Sam would even
tually have to step Into Mexico
and, after, In a nice way, explain
ing to the Mexicans the real signifi
cance of the Stars and Stripes It will
then bo up to Uncle Sam to take Mex
ico under his fatherly and more expe
rienced governmental guidance.
Mexico should rightly belong to the
United States It Ib part of our conti
nental body, through which the arter
ies of tra'lo circulate. Mexico hns vnst
undeveloped resources there Is much
American capital already Invested
there this should be protected and
conditions made possllilo whereby
Mexico could bo thrown open to sys
tematic American development.
There are far more reasons why the
United States should welcome Mexico
into the statehood family thnn there
were for tho mixing Into the Philip
pines, Porto Rico or Cuba.
The fact of the building of the Pan
ama cnnal with American capital Is
sufficient reason alone.
The Panama canal is the result of
American brains, capital, energy and
perseverance It Is the birthright of
succeeding American generations and
it Is up to the present generation to
protect that birthright.

of the hour.
