DAILY CAPITAL JOUR IAL, SALEM, OREGON, MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1913. Piirp Sir Bowels Sluggish, Liver Torpid, Headachy, Bilious? "Cascarets Pastor RusselPs Sermon BLOOD ATONEMENT WAS NECESSARY Christ's Sacrifice Evidence ol Justice o! Divine Law. THE NEED IN PULPIT AND PEW Pastor Declare! It ! Correct Appro ciation of the Value of Blood Atone ment For Sin Failure to Under' tand the Philosophy of This Bible Teaching It Leading Many Noble Minds to the Brink of Unbelief- Higher Criticism Infidelity. Lynn, Miihh., Oc tober 13. One of Pastor Russell's discourses liero to day was from tlio text, "Without tlio shedding of blood, thorc Is no remis sion of Bins." (He brews lx, 22.) Ho said : Wo lmvo como ngnln to tlio time of tlio year when the people of Is rael, under tlio Mosaic nrrni) tie ment, began their civil year. When God cnll ed them ns n nation out of Egypt, It wns under tlio provision that Ho would make a Covenant with them through Moses. That Covenant was that If they would keep tlio Dlvlno Law they should bo released from all condemna tion and have everlasting life. The alternative, failure, meant punishment with death. If they would obey the Law they should not only llvo ever lastliiKly, but bo qualified to bo Abra ham's specially promised seed, through whom all nations would bo Inducted Into the keeping of (he I.nw and Into the attainment of everlasting life. Hut God foreknew that they could not keep Ills I.nw because they, like the remainder of the race, were Imper fect through the fall and God's Law Is the measure of u perfect man's ability: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with nil thy heart, and with all thy strength, iind with nil thy soul, and with all thy mind; and thou shall love thy neighbor ns thyself." Surely none but n per fect man could fully live up to this r'ulienient. Hence the Israelites con tinued to die the same as other people, notwithstanding their Ijiw Covenant. Hut God, foreknowing their Inability to keep this Law, arranged for their continuance In Ills favor under that Covenant by reviving It every yenr on the tenth day of the seventh month, the Day of Atonement On that May the year of their favor and relation ship to God terminated. Let Ui Examine the Type, Ilefore looking for the antitype, let us understand tlio type. The sacrlllce for sins occurred on the Iay of Atone ment, and consisted of two parts: first, n bullock was slain and Its blood sprin kled In the Most Holy, and through It Atonement offered for the sins of the priestly tribe only; then the high priest took his secondary offering, a consecrated goat, and treated It as he hni! treated the bullock. And Its blood subsequently was sprinkled In the Most Holy, "on behalf of all the peo ple," all tlio remaining tribes of Israel. Why were these nnlnials killed? What Is the thought w hich lies behind this death of an animal? What lesson did God wish to teach In type? The condemnation on the Israelites for the violation of the Mosaic Law was not a sentence to eternal torment, nor to Purgatory, but n death sentence. This Is clearly stated. Ity IMvluo com mandment the people were called up between Ml. F.bnl and Mt. Gerlzlm, nnd God's I.inv w as read In their hear ing. Certain blessings were read, which were to be the rewards of obe dience. Contrariwise, curses were read, which were to be the penalty for viola tion of that Law The curses related to death, sickness nnd disease. I These condemnations on Israel for failure to keep God's Law given nt Hlnal agree perfectly with the con demnation Imposed upon Ada in and, through him, upon his race, for failure to obey tlm 1 M vlni Law originally given, which was written In his heart, his character, when he was a perfect man in the Imago of God. Hence Israel under the Law Covenant was merely condemned afresh to death not to denial torment, nor to Purgatory. Then, as Israel typltled the world, the Atonement lay was arranged for them as It will be on n larger, grainier scale applicable lo them and to all of Adam's race eventually. The death of the two nnlnials. the bullock and the goat, spe cially consecrated by the priest, ef fected a covering for the sins of the people for another year, while they tried afresh to demonstrate their loyal ty to God and his righteousness by obedience to the Law; but only failure could and did result: "Ity the deeds of (he Law shall no man be Just HUM In God's sight." because nil llc-di Is Im perfect, weak, degenerate. Thus year by year continuously for over sixteen hundred years the Israel lies kept up their attempt to gain Dl vine favor by obedience to the terms of their lAir Covenant. And year by year they failed afresh, until Jesus ciiine to be the niitltyplcnl Priest, In order that He might eventually become the nntltyplcul King of Israel and the world Ills priestly office was neces sary to Iny the foundation for Ills kingly office. As n King he could not uplift to perfection Adam and his mul ... t V i ' it'AMOk' fc'IISMli:. titudinous race contrary to the Divine sentence of death which rested upon nil, because nil nre sinners. It was necessary, therefore, that, In order to becomo tlio Messianic King, Jesus must (list bo the Redeemer of men, Ho must first provide tlio sacrifice for i In. Then, applying It to the satis faction of Justice, afterward, by virtue of tho right nnd Authority thus secured, Ho could undertako tho uplifting nnd blessing of nil mankind. The Antitypical Blood Atonement. Tho great lessons taught by Israel's experiences of more than sixteen cen turies were: (1) That nil nre sinners, (2) That no sinner can Justify himself. O) That an Atoneniont for Sin Is nec essary before Divine favor enn be fully obtained for Israel nnd nil mankind. (I) That since tho penalty Is death. only by n sncrlflelal death can sinners be released from the death penalty. Wo nil know the arguments used by those who oppose the Iilblc doctrine of Blood Atonement for Sin. They claim thnt It la unnecessary, that God could Just ns easily ns not cancel nil sin with out requiring the death of either n bul lock or n goat, or of Tho Man Christ Jesus, or anybody else. Hut nro not such arguments llloglcnl? Is It not llloglcnl to suppose that the great Supremo Judge of the Universe would make n Ijiw nnd n penalty for It, Inflict tho penalty Justly, nnd nfter wards set nslde tho penalty with out a reason? Surely no earthly Judge would do so, nnd surely n Heavenly Judge could not do so without Infrac ting tho principles of Ills own Govern ment; for if it Is right to Impose a death sentence ns n penalty for sin, nnd to nllow that sentence to bo In ef fect for four thousand yenrs before Christ, nnd to nllow our entlro rnce to suffer under It for thnt time, would It not bo unjust to nftcrwnrds Institute a clinngc, set nslde tho I.nw, the Curse, tho pennlty for slu? Surely wo nil ngrco to this! Koine, however, will say, Surely God never made such n pennlty. Why should Ho make n penalty which would cnuso the death of Ills Son, or the death of anybody, to eradicate It, to set It nslde? We nnswer thnt God did make such n penally; for it Is mnnlfest that our entlro race Is n dying one, which has been under the Reign of Rln nnd Death for Six Great Days of n thousand years eac h. Moreover, the Rlhle declares that God pronounced the penally Inllletod the death penalty ns we have It for the very purposo nnd object of the death of Ills Son, that thus He might give crid:nce, both to nngels nnd to men, that His Law is in vinhiMc, but tiat Ills Justice la fully equaled by Ills Love. "Chrlet'e Better Sacrifice!." If the Jewish Law gave a hint thnt n sacrificial death would bo necessary for the cancellation of human sin, it also gave a hint that the death of bulls and of goats was not sufficient for the cancellation of human slu; because the sacrifices of the Jewish Atonement Day merely covered sin for one year, and did not nctunlly cancel It nt nil. The sacrifice was of n proper kind a life but tho life was not of sufficient value. Why? Hecause tho Law of Justice would not be satisfied to no cept tho death of a bullock and of a goat as the equivalent for the forfeit ed life of Father Adam. If an nngel had sinned and been condemned to death, only the death of an angel of the same grade and state would have constituted a full offset or Ransom for his life; because the very moaning of tho word lltinmm is antt-lntrona cor irnpiimlliin nice. So neither could an angel's dentil re deem n man, because it would not bo the giving of n price to correspond. Neither could our Redeemer, In Ills pre-human condition, ns tho Logos, the Word, hnvo given Ills life for Father Adam and the race, because that would not have been a corresponding price a Ransom -price (Greek anti-lutmn). To redeem Father Adain required the death of a nihii nnd nothing more, nothing less, would do. Therefore it was that the Son of God left the glory which He had with tho Father ns tho Logos ami was made llesh, and became The Man Christ Jesus, "that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for every man." In harmony with this, St. Paul writes to Timothy (I Timothy 11, ft, (!) that The Man Christ Jesus gave Himself a Hansom for all. Thus the Apostle again declares, "As by a man Adam cnnio denth not eternal torment, by a man also Christ comes the resur rection of the dead; for ns nil In Adam die, even so nil In Christ shall bo made alve."-l Corinthians xv. 21, 22. In this last text notice carefully (and also everywhere else in the Scriptures) that tho contrasts are not heaven nnd hell, not Joy nnd suffering, but life nnd iciifc resurrection life through Christ, death by Adam. Notice also that the penalty paid for Adam's sin by The Man Christ Jesus Is not an eternal tor ment penalty, nor n purgatorial pennl ty, but n death penalty. "Christ died for our sins, according to the Scrip Jures." (1 Corinthians xv, 3.) We notice ngaln that It was only the one man Adam who was originally tried, sinned and was sentenced to death; that nil of our race suffered death nud Its degradation by heredity and not by virtue of a denth sentence; hence it was possible that the denth of The Man Christ Jesus should con stitute n full offset to the demands of i'lstleo ngalnst Fnther Adam, nnd Would Incidentally Include nil of Adam's rnce. The Real Sin-Atonement. God arranged Israel's typical Atone ment Dny ns a typo of tlio renl Atone ment Pay, which begnn nt Jesus' bap tism nnd tins continued ever since, and will continue for another thousand years in the future The killing of the bullock on belinlf of the priestly far !y found Its antitype in tho death of Jesus, which begaii with Ills consecra tion nt Jordan mid was completed at Calvary, three and a half years later. As a Man, Jesus offered up sncrlflelal ly His human nature, the body which Ho Iind token for the special purpose of sacrlllce. Thnt sacrifice was satis factory to God, ns wns indicated by His raising up Jesus from tho dend. Moreover, we lire assured that our Lord wns not only raised up out of death, but raised up ns n New Cren ture, to a still higher nature than that which Ho Iind before llo undertook tho Father's commission to be the world's Redeemer, Prophet, Priest nnd King. His resurrection was (Philip plans ill, 10) to glory, honor nnd Im mortality, far above human nature, nngellc nature, principalities nnd pow ers nnd every linmo thnt Is named. Epheslans 1, 21. The risen Son of God rcmnlncd forty days with Ills disciples, nnd when He ascended up on high Ho nppenred In the presence of God, nnd according to the typo made application of tho merit of Ills sacrifice for the Household of Faith tho niitltyplcnl Levitcs. The neeeptiineo of Ills Atonement Sucrl flce, and IncldentnNy the ncceptnnce of Ills waiting followers, was mnnlfest- ed by tho descent of the Holy Spirit at renteeost Adding Members to Hie Body. As Anron In tho typo, by Divine di rection, accepted his sous to be mem bers with him lu tho priesthood, under his headship, so In tho antitype; Christ Jesus during this Gospel Age has been accepting members to tho Royal Priesthood, of which He Is the Head. And these nre taken from the Levltes, for which class tho Atonement was mndo by Anron In the type and by Jesus In the antitype. Anron In the type, nftcr sprinkling the blood of the bullock nnd mnking Atonement for the House of Levi, came forth nnd slew tho gont. So Christ, having finished making Atone ment for the sins of the niitltyplcnl Levltes, cnnio forth nt Pentecost to bless them nnd to accept them ns Jolnt sacrlfloers nnd ns Joint-heirs. The gont, which Aaron slew as the second por tion of his sln-offerlng, represented all the faithful footstep followers of Jesus in the nearly nineteen centuries that have elapsed since Pentecost. Respect ing these Jesus prayed, snylng, "I prny not for the world, but for those whom Thou hast given Me; neither pray I for these nlono, but for nil those who shall believe on Me through their word, that ihey nil may be one, as Thou, Father, and I are one" "1 in them nnd Thou In Mo."-.Tohii xv!l. 0, 20-2.1 Incidentally, Jesus as the High Priest In glory began at Pentecost the sacri ficing of the goat class, Ills faithful followers. The work has continued ever since. The sufferings of Jesus have thus been prolonged for centuries. As St. Peter declares, "The prophets spake of the sufferings of Christ nnd of the glory that should follow." (I Po tor 1, 10, 11.) The sufferings have not yet been completed, nnd hence the glory has not yet come. When the full number foreordained of God shall hnve faithfully finished their course In denth the sacrifices of the antitypical Dny of Atonement will lie nt nn end.. Tho great High Priest with Ills Body will pass beyond the second veil Into the heavenly glories, the Flint Resurrec tion completing the transfer. The bless ing of the people will then be In order. "I Am Jesus Whom Thou Pereecutiet." That Jesus thus recognizes Ills fol lowers as Ills members Is clearly at tested by tho Apostle, lu their flesh they are counted as member of Jesus; as New Creatures, spirit-begotten, they are counted as members of The Christ Thus Jesus said to Saul of Tarsus, speaking of Ills followers, "Saul, Saul, why porsecutostthou Me?" "1 am Jesus whom thou persecutest." (Acts lx, 4, C.) The same thing is true of nny truly consecrated follower of Jesus. Whllo such nre in the world nnd suffer, the sufferings of Jesus nro not completed. And tho glory of Christ can be fully attained only in propor tion in tlio sufferings of Jesus are completed. In the type, nil this wns pictured In the things which happened to tho Lord's goat, which typified the faithful, sacrificing members, the llesh of Jesus. As the goat passed through all the experiences of the bul lock, so the footstep followers of Jesus are to have similar trials, dlilleultles, oppositions, persecutions, to those which came to the Master. With the completion of the Priest of Glory nt the end of the sufferings of the tlesh will come the effusion of the blood on behalf of Israel and all of Adam's race of every nation. In the type Aaron took the blood of the goat, his secondary sacrlllce, nnd sprinkled It on tho Mercy Sent on behnlf of nil the people of Israel, representing nil who will become tho people of God of every nation. Forthwith Divine ac ceptance of these sacrifices spoke the forgiveness of the sins of all. So lu the antitype. When our Lord (he second time sprinkles the blood in the Most Holy, the sins of all the peo plethe whole world will be canceled. At the same Instant the Redeemer will take them over ns n purchased posses sion and, under the Divine arrange ment, He will establish over them His Kingly power. He will reign for their blessing and uplifting. As the great Prince of Glory He will bind the Prince of Darkness, Satan, and destroy nil his works of evil nnd lift poor hu manlty back Into harmony with God alt the willing and obedient. Oh, how this should thrill our hearts and cause us to appreciate the Wisdom as well as the Justice of God nnd Ills grent Love manifested In the Plan which bus required Ages for develop ment, but which was In the Divine Purjwse from before the foundation of the world! At the coming general election the voters of this city nnd county will be faced with a ballot, which, It placed In one double column, will be approximately seven feet long. Though as yet It Is Impossible to es timate the size of the ballot exactly, the county court when arranging for the printing of the ballots for the election calculated that It would be about 16 by 2S Inches. The ballots are printed In three double columns across the shoot, which means that It would be, if given Its correct length, three times (lie length of the ballot or 84 Inches. Must of the space will be filled solidly with the names of candidates or headings of Initiative and refendtim measures. This Is somewhat larger than the official ballot two years ngo, which was 10 by 24 Inches, or six feet long. There will be on the ballot this year 37 measures that have either been referreil to the people or Ini tiated by them. This number Is larger by 18 than in 11)10, hut the ballot is held to about the same size by a less number of candidates, there being a part, of the state and county officers thnt are not up for reelection at this time. With the exception of the ballots which will be out In plenty of time for the election, nil the supplies are in charge of the clerk now. The tally sheets, poll books, pencils and blanks for the official count, which are fur nished by the secretary of Btate, hnve arrived ns well as the envelopes furnished by the county.
