About sixteen men are employed on a payroll of about $1100 a month for labor. A great many teams and men are em ployed hauling materials and deliver ing the product Nearly the entire output of concrete sewer . pipe has been used in Salem and since the es tablishment of this industry a. saving of from twenty-five to forty per cent lias been-effected In the cost of sewer pipe to the people of this city. The Salem Concrete Sewer pipe has been used extensively at Portland and will probably be used In the construc lion of eighteen miles of new sewer at Corvallls, where the specifications admit concrete sewer pipe upon the highest engineering authority of 0. A. C. experts. This kind of sewer has been in use in the United States for forty-one years at Brooklyn, N. Y. and was first extensively introduced in 1860 in Paris. There are concrete sewers still In use in the city of Rome that were built two thousand years ago. Still older concrete sewers were unearthed In tho ruins of Pompeii. At New Bed ford, Mass., concrete sewer pipe has withstood the action of salt water and freezing and thawing for twenty years as proof of Its durability. Miles of concrete sewer pipe have been taken up in Milwaukee, Wis., to be replaced with larger dimensions, and found to be In perfect condition after twenty years of use. The court street sewer In this city, built by Sain Hughes sev enteen years ago, was given a quarter inch lining of concrete and has with stood tho wear and tear and test of siwnge and time. Tho Salem Concrete Sewer pipe Is made on a machine plan of molding known as the semi-wet mix. Water is applied by sprinkling for six days dur ing the setting process. It is believed that It la the most' perfect machine made sewer pl;.e In existence. THE REST OF HARNESS IS MADE IX SALEM F. K. Shafer, of 187 South Commer cial street, is one of Salem's lead ing manufacturers. For seventeen years he has piled his trade here and has Increased his plant until now ho carries the largest stock, employs the more experienced help and uses the most up-to-date machinery In the Wil lamette valley. All kinds of harnesses are manu factured by Mr. Shafer, who makes everything from a dump cart harness to those which grace the finest driving horses. Tho best kind of repair work Is also done and In every line. Only the finest California oak tanned leath er la used. In connection with, his harness fac tory Mr. Shnfer has a general store where anything in the lines of saddles lobes, suit cases, veterinary remedies. n? le grease and gloves can be had.. Mr. Shafer's success Is largely due to the personal supervision he gives to each piece of harness that bears his stump and it is needless to sny that all his work la guaranteed. CHEESE FACTO It Y AMONG SALEM'S BUSY FIRMS Salem would soon become one of the great cheese eating centers of the world If each person In this city had the opporounlty of paying a visit to the splendid cheeso factory conducted by P. A. Schublngcr. At the Oregon state fair In 1903 Mr. Schublnger won first prize for tho best display of all kinds of cheese. He was also award ed the diploma on cheese In glass Jars at Osakn, Japan, In the same year. Mr. Schublnger personally supervises tho work at the factory and sees to It that only first class products are put out There cheese Is made to suit the taste of the most fastidious (or otherwise) and In nny quantity that may be de tired. While In California Mr. Iteasoner learned the secret of blending cream of tartar and soda to make perfect baking powder, and Is manufacturing the name In this city for the home trad. His baking powder contains no filler of any kind, being made from nothing but pure soda and cream of tartar. It is giving complete satisfac tion wherever used. Mr. Rc&soner and hi energetic son are permanently located In Salem where they roat tholr coffee daily and see that only the best teas and spices are sent out. Their policy is to make a house to house canvass and see cus tomers personally. They have already built up a good substantial trade, one which Is growing dally. You will not forget It SALEM BOASTS AS UP-TO-DATE FOUNDRY AND MACHINE SHOP The Salem Iron Works is the larg est foundry and general machine shop In the Willamette valley. The owners, Messrs.. Shand & Marcus, have been operating tho plant for nine years and have built It up from a bankrupt prop osition and an old dilapidated foundry to a profitable and modernly equipped plant All the machinery is new and up-to-date. They are now installing one of the largest turning lathes In the country. They manufacture hop balers, feed mills, centrifugal pumps, sawmill machinery and lumber trucks. They make tho light posts and fire hydrants for the city of Salem and fire escaes. They overhaul locomotives for the Oregon Electric and do general repafc work for the construction com panies. In fact, the foundry is equip ped to do the heaviest' kind of work and is a credit to (he city of Salem. ' OREGON RAISED NURSERY STOCK SECOND TO NONE C. P. Lansing, who from his seven ty-three acre farm near the Pair Grounds, supplies more than fifty smaller nurseries of Washington, Ore gon and Idaho, with stock, has built up a trndo on the merits of his trees. Ho believes in bringing up a tree In the way It should go, and Bprays his stock accordingly. Thirty-five years as a practical nursery stock grower in the east as well as the west, enables Mr. Lansing to put out trees of the highest quality, those which are ac climated to the conditions In Oregon. Mr. Lansing grows every kind of fruit and ornamental trees as well as ill kinds of plants and shrubbery. Ho does a general wholesale and retail business and none of his stock Is con demned or returned marked undeslr plj'o as is often the case with the hap hazard grower. Mr. A. J. Dar ling, who came to tho city a few months ago to establish a furniture factory, has it now In full running order and Is turning out a lino of goods that Is a credit to the city. Orders are pour ing in from all sources and local fur niture men are awakening to the fact that a better quality of goods Is being made at tlu local factory than can be had anywhere. TRY IN SALEM Tho manufacture of bread and biik- ery products is well represented in eur city by the California Dakery, Capital Bakery and the German Ilak- ery. These three establishments em ploy about thirty men and have pay rolls amounting to 11.100 a month. There are times In the year, gutch as during the state fair and hop-plcklng time to say nothing about the Cherry Fair week, when they turn out from ten to twenty thousand pieces of bak ery every twenty-four hours. Tho Salem bakeries buy the flour they use from the local mills, using largo quantities of flour that In pro duced hero, and pint a great deal of money In circulation In this commun ity. Their products are shipped to all the suburbs and many of tho nearby U.wns. There Is a great future In Sa lem for the bakery Industry and with the growth of Uie city the plants will have to be enlarged and Salem 1b bound to become a great distributing center for the staff of life. ANDY FACTORY SECOND TO NOSE LOCATED IN SALEM The Spa Confectionery was estab llshed in 1891 and has been run by the sumo management and In practically the same location for a period of twenty-one years. They manufacture everything in the confectionery line and their goods are known as the best throughout the west Although their store was considered one of Uie neatest in the city it was not up to the high standard of the owners, Mr. W. T. Stoh and Mr. P. J. Myers, who remodeled the place and on May 1st opened a much finer and larger place of business. It Is equip ped with an idea of prompt service and as many as 130 people can be ac commodated at a time. BOAT BUILDING BUSINESS LOCATED IN SALEM Starting In business four years ago with six row boats and one launch, Chas. K. Denison, proprietor of the Salem Boat Factory, has now Increas ed his business until at the present time he has thirty boats, several launches and is employing four men. Ab a livery, the business is In every way u success. Having one of the most beautiful rivers in the United States and a climate to match, there Is no pleasure to Salein people and visitors, like taking a spin or a row on the murmuring Willamette. That the people take advantage of these facts Is shown by the report that often as high as eighty-five bouts are put out In a clngle day by the company above men tioned. Mr. Denison is a practical boat- builder and has been In the business some time, In fact he built tho first launch that ever took her maiden glide Into the Willamette.- This was some nine years ago, and since that time Mr. Denison has had the honor of building the fastest tunnel boat made. His shop Is equipped with the latest boat building machinery which with the many fine sawmills in the valley ennbles him to build better boats for less money than his eastern competi tion.
