PAGE SIX ' DAILY CAPITAL JOCRSAL, SALEM. OKEG03I, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22. '. DURGLAR GOT AWAY WITH $30 velglea his bashful room mate. Ver non Vawter, of Medford, into mak ing love to him. Some daring burglar, or more properly speaking house-breaker, smashed a window In the basement of the residence of C. Earnhardt, 806 South Third street, Thursday morn ing some time after 9 o'clock and there being no one home, proceeded to help himself. He did not. take the furniture and thoughtfully left the cook stove, but he did find a purse with $3 bin coin In It. And no doubt realizing the extra need of a little coin at the gladsome Christmas time, he "benevolently assimilated" It. He forgot to leave his card, a note of thanks or any clue to his Identity, an oversight, and failure In politeness that Mr. Earnhardt deeply regrets. A FINE SKIT VRITTEII BY A SALEM BOY "MAID FOR A NIGHT" IS A IIU. MOKOCS HIT WRITTEN BY LE. IiAXD HENDRICKS, AND PUT OX RY THE OREGON GLEE CLCB TOMORROW NIGHT AS PART OP ITS PROGRAM. In the University of Oregon glee club concert, billed for the Grand opera house next Saturday evening, Norton Cowden, of Sllverton, will be leading lady In a skit entitled "Maid for a Night." The little act was written by Leland Hendricks, of Sa lem, and Is one of the three vaude ville sketches with which the sing ing programme of the club has been flavored. Cowden, sb a female Impersonator, has had no equnl at the university since the days of Bob Rountrle. His make-up Is such that the audience, not knowing otherwise, would sup pose him to bo a beautiful young lady. Except for having a rather stout figure, he would pass as a beau ty on any Broadway. The skit In which Norton Cowden Is landing lady, pictures two room mates, one of whom Is a woman hater. Cowden, dressed as a girl, In- MAGERS GETS A BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS BOX "Ab" Magers Is a pretty good sized man, as well as a Urge citizen, but if you have noticed him closely the past day or two, you will have observed that he Is "all swelled up." It Isn't pride or egotism, or sudden ly acquired wealth, or election to a fat office. Nothing of that kind, but Just a. Christmas present. When you are passing the Standard Liquor company's place on Commercial street Just let your gaze wander In to the big window, and you will not only understand "Ab's"' extended dimensions and Increased embonl point, but you will stop, gaze and admire. The present Is a group cf four beautifully mounted China pheasants, two cocks and two hens a cunning little f0x, pointing hl8 del icate little black nose at you, and fixing you with his Intelligent eye?, as though he wanted to talk to you. The little fellow Is beautifully posed with one foot daintily lifted, and at hl feet a young rabbit, his break fast, which he has apparently drop ped at some sudden alarm. .It Is a dandy little group, a splendid pres ent, and Ab Is perfectly Justified In feeling a trifle chesty. o A BILLIARD PARLOR FOR THE MARION Salem Is soon to have an absolute ly up-to-date billiard and pool hall when the work now being done In the room formerly occupied by the Combination Manufacturing Co. at the Marlon Hotel. Is completed. The name of the new establishment Is to be the "Marlon Billiard Parlor" and the proprietor, Mr. J. C. McElrov. will spend $4,000 in remodeling and furnishing the room. A new feature In pool tables is be Ing Introduced by Mr. McElrov. These tables are of the finest hardwood and are finished In mission, and are not provided with regular pockets on the sides and at the ends, but the balls drop down through chutes at these ' , - i v v ( i ! ! . ,! - - - ' - - '.; 'I I i "h. . ! l WW' Bob Lyman. places and return to a receptacle at the head of the table. Five of these new tables will be Installed and one splendid billiard table. The large room Is being remodeled and reftnished In order that every thing will be in keeping with the scheme of having the entire place finished In old mission. Another pleasing feature of the place Is the balcony at the farther end from which spectators can have an excellent view of all the players. Mr. McElroy Is experienced In this line of business, having formerly owned one of the best billiard par lors In Eugene. He Is also well known In this' city where he has many friends. There will be a grand opening on Saturday evening for which time several matches between local players are being arranged.
