With a plot that would sound ordinary In the telling. It holds the a tt en ton of everyone until the finish, and, when least expected, the risibili ties of every one Is tickled by some unexpected situation or flash of wit. It never tires because it Is a natural, and yet the quaintest thing thnt was ever put on the stage. Critics have tried to analyze the play and have failed because It Is simply what the public want now-a-days, a light en tertainment that amuses you when you see It, and gives you many a hear ty laugh after you have gone home This year the management have out done all their previous efforts in the way of mounting the play, both In the way of scenery and electrical effects, and the costumes are the most gor geous that have ever been prepared for a theatrical production. With the same big chorus of beaueous girls and with a cast of established favor ites the season of this successful play has been one series of turp-away houses, and the same will surely oc cur here on Monday, December 25. Matinee and evening. CHEAPER ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR THE HOME The Portland Railway Light and Power Co. announces a reduction in the price of the 40 watt Mazda lamps. This means a cheaper electric light for the home as 95 per cent of the t t Mazda lamps used In residences are! of the 40 watt aize. Many people ask themselves and others this question, "Is It cheaper to buy and use Mazda lamps than It Is to use the old carbon filament lamps, when the fact that the lighting com pany renews the latter 're ot charge is taken Into consideration?" For the benefit of our readers who have not had the question answered satisfactorily, we wish to submit the following figures: A Mazda lamp will burn for 800 hours as a rule, before It gets black ened or burns out. Some burn out before the 800 hour point Is reached but many burn a great deal longer. Since a 40 watt lamp consumes 40 watthours in one hour. In 800 hours it will consume 800 times 40 watt hours, or 32,000 watthours, which is equal to 32 kllowatthours, (K. W. H.) As the average rate for current Is 10 cents per K. W. H., the cost of current consumed by a 40 watt lamp In 800 hours is 32 K. W. H. times 10 cents, equals $3.20. To this S3. 20 we must add the cost of the lamp, which is now 65c, making a total cost ' ot $3.85 for 800 hours use of the Mazda lamp. Now to compare this cost with the cost of current consumed by a car bon filament lamp or lamps giving the same amount of light. Since a 40 watt Mazda lamp gives 32 candle power of light, we would have to use two 16 c. p. or one 32 c. p. car bon lamp to get th same amount. of light. One 16 c. p. carbon lamp con sumes 50 watt hours in one hour, therefore two of them would con sume two times 50 watthours or 100 watthours and in 800 hours they would consume 800 times 100 watt hours or 80,000 watthours or 80 K. W. H., which at 10 cents per K. W. H. costs $8.00. Since the carbon lamps are re newed free, this cost of $8.00 is the total cost for 800 hours' use of two carbon filament lamps giving the same amount of HgK that Is given by one 40 watt Mazda 'amp. Summary. The one thing more than all others that has a tendency to make lunndrles unpopular In the mind of the public, g the fact that It has been necessary to nse an artificial bleach on white goods, generally a lime bleach which was more or less destructive In Its tendencies. The Salem Steam Laundry is using a natural bleach nn Oxygen bleach that does the work just like the rays of the sun. It Is absolutely harmless to any goods that are handled in - a laundry, and while Its . cost is six times tfat of the old and sometimes harmful lime bleach, It Is now nsed in the Salem Steam Laun dry plant to the exclusion of nil other methods of blenching.
