There would bo four posts to the block and about 200 posts alto gether. Each post would be equipped wllh four loo candle powers tung sten lights and the cost of the post equipped ami ready for service would be the same as In Port laud. The price or lighting these poHts per month would be , the same as In Portland. The post would be 12 feet high and will weigh 700 pounds i,n, will be different from the post In any other city on the Coast, giving Salem an exclusive de sign and one of tho most beautiful posts ever manufactured. Mr. lien Olcolt 'spoke on behalf of the state, lie said he was person ally In favor of the proposition, but could only speak for himself as one member of the executive board. He said the stale would have to stand the expense of 22 posts, and while there Is no appropriation at this time to inver the cost of Installa tion he said that be figured he could save enough money from economies In lighting and water expenses which he was now carrying out, to cover the cost of these posts, and that he felt without n doubt that the other inriMuers oi i no Donrd, Governor West and Treasurer Kay, would Join with him In a favorable report to the next legislature asking for an appro priation to cover the expense of In stalling the posts along the state i properly. Mr. Huckesteln spoke favorably In regard to this kind of lighting sys tem. Mr. lull, chairman of the lighting committee of tho city council, said at the present time the city could stand no expense whatever toward cluster lights, hut that he was heartily In favor of them. John McN'ary said, as a property owner, he would sign the petition, and that if Salem did not put in these lights it would soon be a back num ber. Utile tuwns, like AVodburn and other small places, are going ahead of Salem, and it is the duty of the state capital to make itself as attractive as possible, and that Sa lem owed It to the rest of the state. The following resolution was adopt ed, and a committee of 15 business men will be appointed to help the P. R.. U & P. Co. place the matter before tho people: ( "Resolved, That it is the sense of tho Salem Board of Trade that the representatives of the federal gov ernment ot the state of Oregon, the county of Marlon and the city of Sa lem should lend all possible aid In the matter of Installing and maintain ln cluster lights on the principal streets of the city of Salem." The Illalne Imosters, about 200 strong, with a brass band, arrived in Van couver by special train earlier than they were expected, and were there fore not oltlcially welcomed at the siation. Hut their glory was dimmed by that of a circus parade that was taking place at the same time. They dispersed in favor of the ele phants, and the blare of their trum pets was drowned in the roar of the steam calliope. Almost Immediately after their arrival they went their various ways, seeking the best Dolnt of vantage from which to view the big show. The purpose of the boosters Is to let Vancouver know that Blaine is on tho map and to seek an arrangement with the British Columbia Electric Railway company by which power will be supplied to their city on the border. Byland, of Boone county, Ky., is un der arrest today and his son, Ray mond, has been sent to the Ken tucky penitentiary for five years for the embezzlement of $18,000 from the Richwood, Ky., deposit bank.
