Mr. lien Olcolt 'spoke on behalf of
the state, lie said he was person

could only speak for himself as one
member of the executive board. He
said the stale would have to stand
the expense of 22 posts, and while
there Is no appropriation at this
time to inver the cost of Installa

save enough money from economies
In lighting and water expenses which
he was now carrying out, to cover
the cost of these posts, and that he
felt without n doubt that the other

Mr. Huckesteln spoke favorably In
regard to this kind of lighting sys

committee of tho city council, said at
the present time the city could stand
no expense whatever toward cluster
lights, hut that he was heartily In
favor of them.
Mr. White, of the finance commit

undoubtedly help share the expense
of lighting these posts.

owner, he would sign the petition,
and that if Salem did not put in these
lights it would soon be a back num

Vancouver, R C.', Aug. 21. The
Illalne Imosters, about 200 strong,
with a brass band, arrived in Van
couver by special train earlier than
they were expected, and were there
fore not oltlcially welcomed at the
siation. Hut their glory was dimmed
by that of a circus parade that was
taking place at the same time.
They dispersed in favor of the ele
phants, and the blare of their trum
pets was drowned in the roar of the
steam calliope. Almost Immediately
after their arrival they went their
various ways, seeking the best Dolnt
of vantage from which to view the
big show.
The purpose of the boosters Is to
let Vancouver know that Blaine is on
tho map and to seek an arrangement
with the British Columbia Electric
Railway company by which power
will be supplied to their city on the
border.
