One and a quarter million dollars for advertising and the resources of 10,000 miles of railroad In one year is the answer of the directors of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific systems to the calamity howler. This remarkable appropriation, the largest by far In the history of railroad ad vertising, spells prosperity in capital letters for the United States in the next twelve-month for this stand In favor of aggressive but Judicious ad vertising has not been taken without careful and conscientious weighing of the business, the crops, the emigra tion, the rate decision and all kindred problems which have direct bearing upon railroad and, incidentally, upon national prosperity. The passenger representatives of the Union and Southern Pacific sys tems and the Oregon Short Line met In- Chicago yesterday afternoon and decided upon the expenditure of $1,250,000 in advertising tho facilities offered by these railroad systems and the Industrial opportunities offered by the communities and country they serve during the present year. .HuiiMKcinciit Is Alert No hesitating note, this, no croak ing voice of the pessimist who has been so largely In evidence during the past few years of railroad Inquiry and railroad legislation, but the heal thy, stimulating and vigorous ex pression of a strong, courageous management, unafraid and alert. Too long has tho emigrant hung on the borders of the Atlantic coast, too long has the American farmer boy fol lowed the call of the wild to Canada, and today the farm lands of the West and Northwest are to be faithfully portrayed, and their opportunities Bhown to compete with nny section of the world. "The $1,250,000 that will be spent for advertising," said one of the high officials of the Union Pacific yester day, "will be divided between the Un ion and Southern Pacific, the latter getting three-fifths and the former two-fifths of the amount. A large share of It will be devoted to news paper advertising. Most of It, of course, will be spent In the United States, but a considerable sum will be used in showing the people of oth er countries the advantages of living In the Western part of these United States." EXTENDING THE SILVERTON LOGGING ROAD IT WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME A I'AKT OF THE SALE)!, FALLS CITY & WESTEKN WITH WEST ERN TEIIMINUS AT SILETZ. A. J. Fisher returned to his work on the extension of the Sllverton Lumber company's logging road this ' morning. With County Surveyor a H. Horrick, he has been working there for the past eighteen months. Mr. Merrick has not been there all the time, but they have both been the main spokes In the extension of that line which now runs 10 miles east of Sllverton. It will ultimately bo part of tho Salem and Sllverton line, nnd with the eastward extension of the Spauldlng logging road will be part of the Salem, Falls City and Western, which In a few years will pierce through to the Siletz country aud the Pacific ocean. The granting of the franchise nt Salem last night is part of the link that will enable the line to cross the river at this point, and will put Salem on another transcon tinental line of railroad. This makes Snlem tho railroad center of the Wil lamette valley and a place where no one need fear to invest money in property. o . SOFT, GLOSSY II AIR It Can Only Be Bad Where There Is No Dandruff I Any man or woman who wants soft, glossy hair must be free of dan druff, which causes falling hair. Since It has become known that dan druff Is a germ disease, the old hair preparations that were mostly scalp Irritants, have been abandoned, and the public, barbers and doctors In cluded, have taken to using Newbro's Herplclde, the only hair preparation that kills the dandruff germ. E. Dodd. Dickinson, N. D., says: "Her plclde not only cleanses the scalp from dandruff and prevents the hair falling out, but promotes a new Land Beckons to Hen. Land beckons to the men of the cities and the more populous com munities, who long with all their hearts for a bit of land to call their own Difficulties which seem Insu perable and obstacles apparently In surmountable vanish when, under the direction of a capable advertising manager, the way to the land and the way to get the land are plainly shown to the omnlverous readers of America. The advertising for each of the lines composing the systems will be handled from their respective general offices and the railroads will co-op-eraet with local Boards of Trade and commercial clubs and will cover not only agriculture, but all lines of In dustry which will be helpful to the community. Gerrlt Fort, passenger traffic man ager of the Union Pacific and Oregon Shor Line, lotcated at Omaha; C. S. Fee, occupying the Bame position in San Francisco for the Southern Pa cific; H. G. Kalll, assistant general passenger agent at Kansas City, and William McMurray, general passen ger agent of the Oreogn, Washington River and Navigation company at Portland, Oregon, will have the hand ling of this great advertising appro priation, and Sam Hutchison, the general excursion agent, and W. S. Oassinger, assistant of the airector of traffic, J. C. Stubbs, both Chicago men, will see that the "Great Cen tral Market" Is not forgotten. "One million and a quarter with which to get new business," said one of the Southern Pacific officials last night. "Ten times the appropriation of an average year! If that be fore casting the rate decision, make the most of it." This million and a quarter dollars which will be expended by the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific systems during the present year will be charged to "advertising" on the books, but the purpose for which this huge sum Is to be used Is the peop ling of the Empire of the West the filling up of the fertile lands of Col orado, Wyoming, Utah, Oregon, Call fornla, Idaho, Washington, Nevada and Montana.
