One and a quarter million dollars
for advertising and the resources of
10,000 miles of railroad In one year
is the answer of the directors of the
Union Pacific and Southern Pacific
systems to the calamity howler. This
remarkable appropriation, the largest
by far In the history of railroad ad
vertising, spells prosperity in capital
letters for the United States in the
next twelve-month for this stand In
favor of aggressive but Judicious ad
vertising has not been taken without
careful and conscientious weighing of
the business, the crops, the emigra
tion, the rate decision and all kindred
problems which have direct bearing
upon railroad and, incidentally, upon
national prosperity.
The passenger representatives of
the Union and Southern Pacific sys
tems and the Oregon Short Line met
In- Chicago yesterday afternoon and
decided upon the expenditure of
$1,250,000 in advertising tho facilities
offered by these railroad systems and
the Industrial opportunities offered
by the communities and country they
serve during the present year.
.HuiiMKcinciit Is Alert
No hesitating note, this, no croak
ing voice of the pessimist who has
been so largely In evidence during
the past few years of railroad Inquiry
and railroad legislation, but the heal
thy, stimulating and vigorous ex
pression of a strong, courageous
management, unafraid and alert. Too
long has tho emigrant hung on the
borders of the Atlantic coast, too long
has the American farmer boy fol
lowed the call of the wild to Canada,
and today the farm lands of the West
and Northwest are to be faithfully
portrayed, and their opportunities
Bhown to compete with nny section of
the world.
"The $1,250,000 that will be spent
for advertising," said one of the high
officials of the Union Pacific yester
day, "will be divided between the Un
ion and Southern Pacific, the latter
getting three-fifths and the former
two-fifths of the amount. A large
share of It will be devoted to news
paper advertising. Most of It, of
course, will be spent In the United
States, but a considerable sum will
be used in showing the people of oth
er countries the advantages of living
In the Western part of these United
States."

A. J. Fisher returned to his work

there for the past eighteen months.
Mr. Merrick has not been there all the
time, but they have both been the
main spokes In the extension of that
line which now runs 10 miles east of
Sllverton. It will ultimately bo part
of tho Salem and Sllverton line, nnd
with the eastward extension of the
Spauldlng logging road will be part of
the Salem, Falls City and Western,
which In a few years will pierce
through to the Siletz country aud the

franchise nt Salem last night is part
of the link that will enable the line
to cross the river at this point, and
will put Salem on another transcon

Snlem tho railroad center of the Wil

one need fear to invest money in
property.
