The American Magazine for October publishes following . poert "by the greatest of living English poets, and. it Is in many ways and by all odds the greatest poem that has ap peared in a decade: If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you: If.yoti can trust yourself when all men doubt you, ; But make allowance for their doubting too: . . ',' If yqy can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about don't deal in lies, Or being bated don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream and not make dreams your master; If you can think and not make thoughts your aim, If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same, ' If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken 'Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or Watch the things you save your lite to, broken, And stoop and ouild 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, Ar)d lose, and start again at your beginnings . And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew ' To serve your turn long after they are gone, ' And so hold on when there is nothing in you ( Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' If you can talk with .crowds and keep your virtue, , Or, walk with Kings nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If vou can fill the unforeivine minute 1 With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And which is more you'll be a Man, my sonl 0 f PORTLAND'S BIGGEST STORE. The editor of this newspaper got a fine vote in Multnomah county where not a single newspaper was for him, and where the worst possible misrepresentations were published against him, " He rolled up alone and single-halided 2938 votes and some precincts to hoar from, and in ton precincts he had more votes than any other candidate, and tied Mr. Bowerman in one other precinct. In tho precincts where Mr, Hofer spoke he ran ahead, and had he been allowed to speak at any of the ward meetings held by the local candidates he would have carried the city, In all the storm of attacks in the newspapers not another candidate or newspaper or political leader said one word in his defense and the wonder is that he got any votes at all. The support he received was from the laborers and poorer class of people who felt that he was their friend and that ho spoke from sincere convictions for the eight-hour law and better wages, To counteract this a lying telegram was sent from Salem 'Friday night and it was headed up that a Labor Union at Salem had denounced Col, Hofer a libellous statement that it was too late to answer. It is a high complimont to a man that tho organs of the Interests had to exert themselves as they did to defeat a peo ple's candidate, TWO 6REAT COMPANIES INCORPORATE IN OREGON The Great Northern Railroad With Capital of $210,000,- 000 and Oregon & Western Colonization Co., Capital $12,000,000. Precautions Against Forest Fires The regulations of tho New York State Forest, Fish and Game Com mission applying to fires might woll bo strictly adhered to by campers and sportsmen in any part of tho country, They are, In part, ns follows:. "The State expends largo sums In preserving the forests as a pleasure resort, and ask3 those seeking Its pleasures to contribute their share by guarding carefully against fire. "Fires will bo permitted for the purpose of cooking, warmth and In sect smudges on state land; standing timber shall not bo used- to build fires. Fires must not be started on the leaves; all combustible material must bo cleared away five feet from fire. A sand beach or dry creek bed Is the safest fire-place. Fires must be thoroughly quenched, not covered up or stamped out. The ground be neath should be saturated with water. Fires must not be stared against stumps, trees or near piles of lo'gs or brush. "Fires other than those mentioned above are absolutely prohibited Caution must be exercised against al lowing fires to originate from use of firearms, cigars and pipes." During mid-summer it is hard enough to keep down forest fires arising from other causes than neg lect and foolhardiness. During a dry summer many fires start from natur al causes. A person who has not been in the woods during a bad sea son of fires can not realize how seri ous a conflagration can grow out of a spark in an hour's time, If conditions are right. And It does not always happen, ns It sometimes does In Maine, that there are plenty of fire X SALEM MARBLE & GRANITE WORKS for less money than others can sell them for in this locality.
