HILL WILL BUILD INO CENTRA LOREGON.
About a month ago John F, Steevens of the Hill railroads
made a thorough investigation of the Central Oregon line pro
posed via the Deschutes canyon
i toi Brothers wont Into the oanyon with construction
crews and began to take posscsson and throw dirt.
Next C, H. Carey, corporation counsel for the Hill system in
Oregon, Introduced Mr. Steevens at a Commercial club dinner
as owner of the Deschutes line.
Then it Is publicly announced that J, J, Hill is backing the
Porter Brothers in their fight for a foothold on the Deschutes
as the entrance to the storehouses of wealth in Central
Oregon.
President A, L Mills of the Portland First National Bank is
"more than glad that our prayers are finally to be answered."
Mr. Mills is a praying man and has joined our class.
Mr. Lang, president of Lang & Co., wholesale grocers,
says! "A railroad into Central Oregon means $10 to Portland
where $1 is received from the North Bank line."
Portland budinoss men are awakening to the importance of
the fight for ooomiifi up Central Oregon.
So Tt may be set down as a fixed fact that a Hill line will pen
etrate Central Oregon via the Desohutcs.
This means that a bridge wM cross the Columbia at The
Dalles.
It moans tha: a big city will sp sing up at thai point, and on
the Oregon side,
The Dalles w'll becomo tlie gateway city to Central Oregon,
and the point for trans-shipment of commerce of the upper
and lower Columbia and the interior.
Watch the development of power and the establishment of
manufactures at the falls of the Columbia.
As a creator of business a stimulator, of cities and an em
pire builder, Hill is the unrivalled king among railroad mag
nates. The Inland Empire has waited long for its king.
The coming of Hill Into the Oregon field for development
means the establishment of another big city on the Columbia,
It means death now and destruction forever to monopolies
that have kept the great undeveloped interior from coming to
its own for twenty years oast.
It will bo a great day tor Central Oregon when the first
train enters the steel-encircled empire of Harriman.

WHAT ABOUT RAILROAD LEGISLATION?
Progressive railroad legislation would nover have got
through the Oregon and Idaho legislatures but for the Oro
gonlan's help.
Tho Orogonlan is now riveting attention upon the proposed
railroad amendment to the Oregon constitution and may in
sure Its adoption before the people by its tactics.
When that amendment had practically failed to be consid
ered in tho Oregon senate the Orogonlnn in prominent head
lino articles promised Immediate construction of Harriman
lines into Central Oregon ,to Klamath Falls from Natron, from
Drain to Coos Bay, and branch lines in all directions. It
promised too much.
That was done for soveral days, with hints -that if tr.o
amondment was passed ty Hie sonate all promises of new
linos mado by Harriman would be linmodlatoly withdrawn
, and all orders for construction would be cancelled in Oregon
and Idaho.
That aroused the bushes interests of the whole state and
they doscondod on tho pooi old doddering framed-up state
sonato and made it come through with the railroad amend
ment in spite of the interests.
Harriman has not withdiawn fiom Oregon and has let more
construction contracts than ever before.
Two weeks ago the Orunian called In question all Its as
sertions made to the legislatuie by publisilng an array of
railroad construction pioposed in the Pacific Northwest of
$35,000,000. and of this $17,000,000 in Oregon railroads.
Further refuting the Orogonlan's predictions of dire disas
ters flowing from adoption of the railroad amendment, Hill
has entered the Oregon railroad field.
Twenty steam and electric extensions are under way In
various parts of this stato, and Oregon never saw such activ
ity in railroad development as during the year 1909.
Since the submission of the i ailroad amendment Hill and
Hnmman have paid Oregon more attention than ever before.
It is to be deplored that conditions were such as to drive
the business interests of Oregon and Idaho to demand such
drastic far-reaching legislation.

islature in 1909 by threats and misrepresentations, so it may
drive the people to adopt the railroad amendment at the polls
in 1910.
Of course, no one disbelieves the Oregonian's statement
that $17,000,000 will be spent on new rallroas in Oregon.
Have you ever stopped to think that at $20,000 a mile that
sum will build 850 miles of new lines?
One of two things must be true: Either the Oregonian is
publishing paid dope for theHarriman interests, o rthe sub
mission o fthe railroad amendment has the desired effect of
awakening the aforesaid interests
Harriman and the allied "interests" are taking more than
$20,000,000 a year out of Oregon and Idaho in net earnings.
In justice to Oregon and Idaho, why should they not build
more lines here than in any two states of the Union? Can tho
Oregonian answer?
Idaho and Oregon are developing fruit industries and irri
gated districts that have rapidly outgrown transportation fa
cilities. The Oregonian hammered Harriman policies unmercifully
until it got a special early train service out of Portland that
gives it an absolute newspaper monopoly of Oregon.
Since then it is the trucculent mouthpiece of cold-water pol
icies to maintain things as they have been for twenty years,
It sings the siren song thatt sounds so consoling to the
hibemator. "Oregon as she was is good enough for Oregon as
she is and for all time to come."
Keep Idaho twenty years behind Oregon, is the slogan.
Webster's spelling oook and three months' school a vear
are good enough for the masses.
Why should the people be given any power to break trans
portation monopolies?
Didn't our forefathers do business on the Erie canal, and
didn't Uncle Harvey Scott coome to Oregon on the original
Democratic mule?
Harriman and the Rockefeller interests don't want the rail
road amendment ,and yet their organ is employing the very
arguments that will rivet it upon this commonwealth.
