The Kind You Have Always Bought Bears the Signature of In Use For Over AW a rfV Thirty Years CUSTOM tnf miitw Mr,wwmw. The recent action by tho board of directors of the Amorlcnn Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way association In appointing a committee of soventoon to Investi gate and report upon the subject of wood preservation has shown that the practical railroad men of tho country recognize tho Importanco of taking steps to conserve tho rapidly diminishing timber supply of tho Uhlted States. Timber Is one of the principal ma terials purchased by tho railroads and its economical uso is a subject of far, reaching Importanco. Moro than 100,000,000 cross ties aro used nnnually by the difforont . railroad companies, and their averago Hfo In this country Is not more than six or soven years. From a BtUdy ot Eu ropean methods, and tho knowlodge of wood preservation under condi tions In this country, timbor testing engineers say lt Is reasonably certain thnt an averago life of from IB to 20 years mny bo secured by trontlns tho tlo with a good preservative and the mbo of Improved dovlces for tho prevention of mechanical abralslon, thus to a largo dogreo diminishing tho drain upon tho Umber supply. Whllo tho qunntlty of timber Used for ties Is very gront and tho problem of n future supply Is a ser ious ono, yet this class of timbor Is not tho only ono which should ro colvo consideration. A greater length of sorvlco from timbor now used by railroads for bridges, tros ties, piles, fences, and transmission poles Is groatly to bo desired. A. L. Kuohn, onglncor of trae'e and roadway, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis railway, Is chairman of this Bpoclal wood pres ervation commlttoo and C. Q. Crnw ford, specialist tn wood preservation, United States Forest Sorvlco, 1b Its vice-chairman. Tho flrst meeting wnB held In Chicago In tho enrly part of last month for tho purpose of organizing nnd deciding upon n plan of work. ( ' ; f I This American Railway Engineer ing and Malntonnhco ot Way associa tion now consists or about 000 mora bors representing 200,000 miles of railroad track and Including among Its membership tho lending rnll road onglneors of tho country. Tho object of the association Is tho ad vancement of knowlodgo portnlnlng to tho scientific and economical con struction, oporatlon nnd malnton nnco of rallroartB. The method em ployed to obtnln this Information Is through Htandlng committees np pOIntod by a board of directors. Each commlttoo Is appointed to In vestigate a special subject and to re port nt each annual meotlng, pro- sontlng tho results of Its Investiga tion, rollowed by recommendations which are published In "The Man mbI of Recommended Practlco," nf- tor they have been ndoptod by tno association.
