They Bay there Jb nothing new under tho sun, ifut it is a ralstakeV New wnyB of robbing people are con stantly cvolveJ. An Instance oc curred recently In which the victim landed in Corvallls completely di vorced from his earthly possessions. He was a Tennessee young man who was enroute to Oregon, seeking hto fortune. He had been employed for a long period in a hardware estab lishment, at tho head of which, was a near relative of J. H. Harris. As ho neared tho confines of Oregon the young man became acquainted with a genteel appearing person who pro fessed to be proprietor of a big store at Pendleton. That was his game, as the sequel will Bhow. The strang er learned that tho youth'B errand in tho west was to find employment. "These is no use for you to go on to Portland," ha explained; "you can Btop-ofT at Pendleton, an'd I will give you a flno position In my store at a gooil Salary." , . , Ol course, it looked Inviting. Tho young man bit. Ho stopped off at Pendleton, amL,weH.t with a stranger to a hotol. Ho arogc tho next morn ing, to find his friend missing. So was his wallet. 8o was everything of valuo ho had in tho world about him, except fortunately, his railroad ticket. With this, ho reached Port land. On tho train nrrlvlng In Port land, ho met n Salem man to whom ho told his story. Tho latter was kind, and loaned him money enough to reach Corvallls. Hero ho found Mr. Harris, with whom ho romnlnod a day or two, and by whom he waB assisted. Ho wont from thero to Portland, whero ho secured employment nt onco In a big hardware storo, and Js now recouping his losses. Ho will not trust nnothor train acquaintance for n long tlmo to come, and porhaps this narration of his cxporlenco may warn othors to bo equally discreet with new frlonda under tho Bnmo clr cumstonces.
