The shoos of tho officer and soldiers had becomo worn to shreds and they had to strip themselves of part of their clothing with which to bandage their foot. Tho Boles and othor parts of their feet became a mass of running soros. Tho party startod out with dogs and sleds to carry their baggage, but tho dogs perished for lack of food short ly after crossing the mountain rango.
