This is a small place on the coast, which had a bad fire in 1808, burning part of the city, and nearly nil of tho timber. Then wo drovo to tho grange hall on Half Way creek, halfway to Gold Beach or Wedderburn. This town Is owned, or most of It, by ox-Senator Hume, nnd is situated on tho north side of Roguo river Just above Gold Bench. Tho ferry is four miles above theso towns, where wo crossed, nnd camped all night. Wo mot J. E. Taylor, nnd fnmily, who lintl re turned from a hunt five miles from n small town with two churches, two hotels, two blacksmith shops, two general stores, flvo saloons, two creameries nnd about 800 people, and Is In a fine dairy district. We camned for dinner on tho banks of Smith river, wo had to ford tho stream, and It came up in the carriage body four Inches deep. In tho afternoon wo cot into tho great red wood timber of California. Some treea will measure 75 feet around. We are now nt Crescent City for tho night. This is a sen- port, and tho steamers are all con trolled by tho lumber company. Freight to this point Is high. Thoro are about 1,200 people in this place. Tho Btoro which AI Coolrldge of Silverton used to run 1st empty, nnd tho old town is almost deserted nnd very dilapi dated. Thfi postofllco Is known as Harbor. Chotco valley proper is tho finest valley wo have seen on tho coast, it Is ono mllo wide by four miles long, and has somo oxcellent dairy farms, Ono run by Alfred Jackson of 80 cows, and ono by Pelrola Bros., of 80 cows, Tho first placo Is owned by McEvoy Bros., and tho second placo by Fred Blake. Al Cooly owns n flno ranch, and somo fine stock, which is rented to Jean Berzzho who also milks 80 cows. They sell their butter to tho San Francisco market at 28c net. This Is the only farming land we have seen to Bpeak of since wo loft Myrtlo Point. We aro now camped three miles up the Wlnchuck river with Mr. Ben jamin G. Adams, who is running a dairy; this is a rough stream. Tomorrow wo get over tho state line Into California, and will soon bo In the big red wood belt of timber. This afternoon, August 7th, Is tho first rain we have seen on our trip. A general rain of ono day, nnd night. The Wlnchuck valley has some flno farms, or rather dairy ranches. Most of them are small.
