Weak, sickly peoplo often remark, "If I could only got something that would nourish me and give me strengti," they do not know why, but the food they eat is of no benefit to them, they gain no flesh and feel no stronger. Tbo fact is the stomach it too weak to perform its work, and the little appetite they once had is soon gone. The blood becomes more thin and watery, bringlsg oa faint sick spells with Joss of memory and ambi tion. There is a remedy for all this that acts ia the right way. It is called Dr. Gunn's Blood and Nerve Tonic, and is sold by ail druggists for 75c per box, or 3 boxes for 42. It turns the food 70s eat into rich, red blood, atakiag iesh aad streagta, creating aa appetite beeaase the systcat de mands susteaaaee. . MLCN IMMKTS fH MLUW fSfxC I Tho housewives of Salem will bo a littlo annoyed for a short period with roily water inthcit faucets, but, if they will take tho time to read tho ex planations which follow, they will) be content to bear the temporary incon vonienco in order to reach tho good results which will follow. ; It has been tho desire of tho Salem Water Company to give its patrons tho bost service) within tho roach of human effort, and to this end Presi dent Park has been planning a system of improvements for eomo timo which would leave no room for doubt or mis giving as to tho quality of wator pro cured for and furnished to tho people. His intention was outlined in tho fol lowing letter to the secretory of tho stato board of health at Pertland: Salem, Or., April 13, 190C. Dr. R. C. Yonuy, Secretary Stato Board of Health, Portland, Oregon. Dear Sir Wo aro contemplating tho project of increasing tho filtering system we have nt Salem, nnd beforo wo take any steps in this diroction wo dcslro to havo you inspect tho manner In which wo filter and tako tho water, also to examine bacteriolbdcallly tho water in our water main andl in tho Willani otto river adjacent to tho filter. In order to Install tho conducts In cident to tho Alteration of tho water, it is necessary for us to dig deep- in .tho gravel sand tbar with a steam dredigor, which will for a short timo open a channel direct from tho rivor into tho present filter crib. i While thli work is being done wo are extremely nnxlous to tako every precaution to prevent any contamina tion of tho water or impair ,the health of tho community. To this end wo respectfully ask your opinion as to tho efficiency of our filter, tho advisa bility of oxtonding tho same, and whnt precautions wo can tako to prevent any impairment of tho health of tho c. Very truly, SALBM WATER CO. By Chna. Park, President. ) City Water. Is Puro. Mr. Park received tho following re ply yostenluy, it having been dolnyod through the absence of Dr. Mntson, tho bacteriologist, who .is spoken of in tho letter, who was In San Francisco part of tho time: Portland, "May 17, '00. Mr. Chas. A. Iirk, Salem, Or. Dear Sir: In reply to your lettor will say that tho water taken by Dr. Mntson from tho city main and1 from tho river shows us, follews: Tho water from the main showed no growth of bacteria and for that reason is excellent wator for domestlo use. An Immeases Job, Tho work spoken of by Mr. Park has been in progress somo weeks and has reached a stogo toward completion when of necessity tho water In the mains will bo discolored bf sediment. Tho company concluded to extend tb filter In tho river by building a eon duit 300 feet long, extending wct ward under tho gravel bar, and to do this it was noceswry to procure the uso of tho government dredge, wb ch was done through tho secretary of war and this dredco has been in operation here during tho past threo weeks. By means of this channel forty feet wldo and in eomo places over twenty fct deep has been dug through the gravel bar for over threo hundred fctt, into which will bo inserted a c.n-Jult through which the water will filter, and which in reality Just so muh of an extension to the present crb awl filter. This eondit will be set eight f('t below low water mark of the river and nearly four feet below the present bed of the etreajn. The ditch is eut through tho gravel of the river bed to a hard pan cement and through this again to a bod of boulder gravel, apparently the old time river bed. Upon this tlw timbers of the conduit will rU and oa top of it when completed will be the gravel bar tea to ifteea feet deep. Own e Safer Water.
